So i'm studying art rn (about to get back into art college on monday, and hoping i'll have time to map and imp this year). Here's a selection of my stuff from this year. Being an artist is what got me into mapping, at first I was planning to learn hammer quickly to get 3d bases for environnement paintings.

When i'm not inspired I drew funny looking fellows

Someone had someting hilarious happen in their Dwarf fortress Game, so I drew it

I also draw big booties for money and artistic fame (nsfw)

Hope I didn't spam too much the thread with my stuff

I'm unsure Hammer was your best choice for that. IMO the only thing that program is best at is mapping for Source games, because there's no alternatives.
But that got you to this community, which is nice.

Level design isn't 3D modelling. Learn things like Blender, Maya or 3ds Max if you actually want to learn 3D modelling. A person that knows everything about hammer knows nothing about making a model.
This may not be the most relevant video, but it compares some level creation software as well as 3ds Max.

Well I should have made the precision "paint over tf2 environnements and props", like I did for my frontline 72h painting

I know blender, and i'm in the process of learning maya.
I always kinda wanted to get into mapping, always seemed more complex than it actually was, at least if you focus on detailing like I do. By learning hammer I had a nice alternative to 3d that let me access source and run the map immediatly in the game.
Thanks for the vid and the advice, I watched almost all of GDC's channel but missed that one.

Heh, I would probably build environments in Hammer and then trace over screenshots too if I ever needed a complex background with a lot of perspective and junk. And if I ever learned how to digitially paint well enough to do decent backgrounds.

Also, @NickTF, I made one for you as well, but since it wasn't a square I had to extend it some. I tried my best to complete it, but I've never played "The Sneaky Racoon Lad Does A Thing" series, so I don't know how well I did.
