So, everyone keeps telling me I need to put an easter egg on my maps.I would like to oblige, but I have no good ideas....

You got one?

Well, in my recent release of Billiards, I put a TV in the skybox that has special thanks to those who helped scrolling on the screen.

You can add a portal/HL2 spray on some obscure location of the map for something simple.

Something more complex could involve a whole secret room, outside of the playable area (spawnrooms are good for this) where you can have some sort of joke or reference. The old "you are not supposed to be here" banner is also good, just remember to put a nobuild there and hide it well (a passage behind a locker prop, set to not solid). You can add references to other games, especially something of the past (imagine a space invaders arcade, or a bob-omb model somewhere).

For more intricate ones you can create areas with hidden props that tell a little story... get creative!

God, I wish I still had my tfc maps. There was this one map made by a member of the [WTF?] Clan (Chemical or something like that I think). He had a secret room that was a gigantic obstacle course, rings of flame, lava pits, and so on. I never figured out how to get in there, besides noclip, but it was awesome.

There was a CSS map, called Haunted or mansion, I think. It was basically a mansion, and the stairs in one of the rooms was broken and the entrance to a room was obscured, but if you noclipped you could see the room.
The room was nothing special, pretty normal I think, but it was kind of creepy just being there.

You can make a small, hidden room, like arthurt said; and when you enter the room a message opens:
- Get out of here! This room is still under construction!
- The explosives will explode in 10 - 9 - 8 - .. and nothing will happen
- Go help your teammates out of trouble instead of hanging around here!
- Who made this room?
- Damnit. Who didn't close that door?!
- etc...

There was a Call of Duty 2 map (or was it COD 1?) that had a hidden room in the basement of a building. When you went in, it had the whole Indiana Jones thing where you had to spell out words on the floor or fall through to your death. Had an invisible "leap of faith" ledge as well. Good fun. :)

You should put a little overlay in some far off corner of your map (visible, but not anywhere near where you normally look) and have it as your little logo or something like that.
Shmitz does it with his maps and I've often considered it with mine but I've never got around to it. He put some screenshots of them up but I'll never find the thread, perhaps if (I know its unlikely) he reads this he'll repost them so you can see.

LOL - why not make a room.

Put a Dharma Logo (with the lost music in background) in it then make a bunch of monitor looking things and put in all the videos that you can see from halfelife-2 - ie nova prospect and a door with teleport that takes you out.

or

Same room 1 monitor - big chair you can jump in - with table light & popcorn. Jumping into the chair turns on the tv - it turns on one of the TF2 movies that you would see at the begining of a map but in this case you can watch Gordon freeman battle is out with the aliens or something. At the end of the movie a transparent door on the chair moves out of the way exposing you to a teleporter - taking you to a zen like area - You see a teleporter vortex, hear Nilah sayinging, "Freeeeemaaaannnnnnn" followed by Kliner yelling, "Freeman you must jump NOW!!" into the vortex you go or trigger hurt comes on and kills you. Jumping into the vortex takes you back into the game. Only one person at a time can go into the sequence so you'd have to time the entering of the room right. :)

heh I have another idea, but I don't know if it's possible:
make a place in your map, somewhere hidden, where a normal player wouldn't come, and when you walk in there, your melee weapon changes into some stupid weapon: a rubber chicken perhaps? or a big beachball? ...

re my idea, can the movie idea be done in game? I'm thinking of doing it for one of my maps.

maybe we should have an easter egg contest

I don't think movies (like your idea, using func_monitor) can be done in TF2...

The idea is cool, but have you thought about how much the file size would skyrocket with something like that in? :p

I'd say stick to a secret overlay or something. Something simple that doesn't distract from the map and that isn't overkill, if you actually have to have an easter egg.

I remember on a Quake 3 map (DM 18~) they put the a huge picture of the dope fish on the bottom of the level which you could only see after you'd fallen off and decided to glance back at the platforms you decided to walk off

You could put up a L4D poster or something, or create some custom textures and use those as easter eggs.

Make the screen turn black, and after 6 sec the shamwow commercial begins

well personally i'm thinking of hiding a tennis court off the main play area on my next map, so admins on my clan server can no clip to it to set up a pyro tennis match (bouncing rockets to and fro)

If you're creative enough, you could make an easter egg that can't be found simply by noclipping.

Example: In a map I made, if certain requirements are met, the lights in the basement turn to colorful flashy lights and music plays. It's not exactly a hidden room, so it's impossible to find just by flying around.
