Because I can't get enough of doing things.

This game will hopefully be a game.

Wow look at that ugly screenshot, what a game.

Though the cool part about it is that the game runs at 60 FPS, so it's ultra smooth, and I love it.

Right now I don't have many ideas on what the final product will be, so stay tuned for info! Or just suggest something to me, I'm open for ideas right now....

A score and a lives counter join the screen, bringing some depth to this otherwise waste of time engine!

On a more serious note, this is looking pretty cool so far! (I don't even know if gamemaker supports unlocked framerates or not)

I never knew how to make games in Gamemaker. That's why I rather used clickteam fusion 2.5.. But the free version not allow many things. So if you can link me some tutorial I would be happy!

That's really cool, I myself am a C++ programmer, Since last year. I had to remake a platformer for my uni exam, so I made a mash up of different kirby games. Sadly I cannot upload a playable version anywhere because it uses a combination of BOX2D engine and my uni's own engine. Also bloody Nintendo would be all up in my ass. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I never used or really looked into gamemaker, but I can see it looks like a pretty fine tool. So far I'd say ( i dont want to come across as a dick) but I really don't like the artstyle of your game, it's super generic and really boring to the eye. If you're gonna stick with it I'd suggest getting some good animations in the background too, not too extreme though! you don't want it to distract.
Besides that, well, uhm, the UI looks pretty lame ehh :s .. I like the cylindrical tube though, but i think the positioning is a bit annoying.

I would love to follow the progress of your game if you decide to commit though. I really don't like quitters. ;)
Best of luck

Some screenshots of my first game for my first year of uni programming exam. (C++ using modified BOX2D Engine).

why are you using gamemaker 8.0 when you could be using gamemaker studio?
Because GMS has a horrid room editor.

Since the game is rather early in development, I'm not gonna fuck around with too many artstyles because the gameplay isn't fully complete yet.

Also that Kirby game looks pretty fuckin cool

Speaking of Gamemaker, here's one of the first games I ever made using Gamemaker 7 like six years ago or something with one of their basic tutorials:
a6461891fc16c63132000ed566dfcbe5.png
It's called "Car Warz 2" (yes, there was a Car Warz 1 too) and it's literally just a scrolling road with two tanks that shoot at you and respawn immediately at the top of the screen when they die, complete with sound effects from TF2 and CS:S. (It has the Gamemaker lite watermark because I had to recompile it with a newer version.)

Nowadays, I'm trying to make my own 2D game engine in C++ instead, and in my opinion, learning programming is much more fun than using proprietary software like Gamemaker or Clickteam Fusion unless you really just want to see results, and it will probably be a lot more useful for you in the future.

It's certainly possible to make games using apps like this (Undertale, for example, was made in Gamemaker, and Freedom Planet, my favorite 2D platformer of all time, was made in Multimedia Fusion 2) but the result won't usually be fantastic to work with. Especially in the case of Freedom Planet, where I've heard horror stories from the game developer about how terrible it is to add new features and fix bugs that crop up at random due to limitations in the engine (although the game wasn't exactly programmed fantastically to begin with). Needless to say, they've jumped ship to Unity (and C#) for the sequel.

Anyway, @Moonrat, I personally think the artstyle of your game has a pretty charming appeal to it, despite being simplistic and looking kinda "MS Paint-y". Depending on what you're going for it might actually not need any drastic changes. But if you want some inspiration, here are some prototype screenshots from Freedom Planet 2 which kinda reminds me of your game because it has a similar resolution:

Welp, lucky for me, I specialize in MS Paint. Unlucky for me, I plan on redoing this game's art at some point to look a bit better....
