Yeah. Doesn't make it any clearer how that got turned off by itself or why turning it back on breaks other stuff. Other question, though: Does this setting reset itself back to 0 whenever you start the game? Because I've been having that issue with mat_specular lately.

It doesn't seem to reset itself far as I can tell. Been in my configs set to 0 for ages but I only noticed the aliasing/mipmap issue once I upgraded my card.

Not entirely sure why the change in card made it more apparent -- but if you look at the various screens, you can see the mipmap aliasing is really only very obvious on the dev textures. It's much harder to notice on the ground and cobblestone textures. Maybe I just hadn't loaded up an early alpha map with my high quality config since well before I got the new monitor as well (new monitor in earlier in the year, went from 1600x900 to 1920x1080, and new card in July). Shrug.

Any fps boostwhen turning this off? I haven't seen this command in fps configs.

It's in Chris's high quality config. I never could tell any fps boost at all with off or on.

So, i have fairly good card, R290 and i have mat_mipmaptextures 1. I don't see black models ingame. Except if i view them from backpack. Ingame they look just fine.

Mine go black with this on both in the backpack and in game. Turning it off and restarting and they're fine again. I remember reading about other people having the black skin problem at the start of Gun Mettle, but I don't remember ever seeing them myself until I started messing with the mipmaptextures setting.

You did ran verify integrity of game cache? Though i doubt it's that since you see them occasionally fine.

Your video settings are not set to max, change them. It's not hard, there's nothing to complex there. If that no work, than try again. The easiest way is just make TF2 do it for you. Just go to the advanced settings and change everything to max, and if that doesn't work change delete the file and verify the game through Steam for it to give it replace it. Also, Tf2 isn't a very pretty game so keep that in mind. Gl
I'm a week late with this, but all Valve games also have a startup option to reset all settings to default.

I'm not sure if it resets keybinds (although I'm assuming yes).

Go to TF2's properties in Steam, click Set Launch Options..., and add -autoconfig then start the game. Exit the game again, go back to TF2's Set Launch Options and remove the -autoconfig.

(Side note: I recommend having -novid in your Launch Options to skip the Valve screen.)

I'm a week late with this, but all Valve games also have a startup option to reset all settings to default.

Think you missed it since it was buried in one of my other wordy posts, but I did that already -- it's how I figured out it was mat_mipmaptextures and not an aliasing issue.

Used -default to compare, which led me to the cause. Turns out it had absolutely nothing to do with anti-aliasing at all

Are you getting the black decorated weapon textures when running with -default?

mat_mipmaptextures 1 is the intended setting, for good reason (mipmaps increase the quality of far away textures drastically). Whatever's going on with the decorated weapons seems to be a problem on Valve's end, and not all users see black textures either.

Also, slightly unrelated, if you're a texture artist/spray creator thinking disabling mipmaps makes it "higher quality", just stop. It actually looks worse, and a smaller file size is definitely not worth the quality trade off.

I'm not so sure about this, because it means you cant escape having TF2 be the active thing (or having your screen be really inflated) while TF2 launches. I suppose that isn't a problem if you have multiple monitors though.

This has nothing to do with the TF2 window taking up space on the screen. It just disables the VALVe logo video from playing when the game launches. If you want to switch between windows while the game is loading, make it run in a borderless window.
