Maybe they did it because new users can easily notice the clock and go "hmm what's that?" then get taken to the jam thread so that they can recognize the event and overall more people can participate for it. (maybe thats too elaborate)

Maybe but they could let the old users hide this clock with a "Hide" button

Yeah, "If you don't like it, hack it out yourself" is a poor approach to UX. Ad blockers and other such hacks are meant to be a last resort for dealing with sites run by shitty people.

Personally I was disappointed that the conspicuous switch at the top wasn't a cleverly-designed close button.

Can't even block it with adblocker, it always pops up again when refreshing site

It's placed weirdly. It's just... there. Nothing around it, just sort of slapped there. Would be great if it was back up with the site's logo.

I mean, yes, it sticks out, but it just doesn't feel right.
