Hi Tallan, welcome to TF2Maps, we hope you enjoy your stay! The cafe is down the hall, first door on your left. We serve free breakfast in the mornings, from 6 am to 11 am. Biscuits are only on Tuesdays!

Be sure to join the TF2Mappers Steam Group ( http://steamcommunity.com/groups/TF2Mappers ), and hang out in the group chat with all of the other cool kids. You can also get notified on the announcements sent out by the group, usually announcing imps (impromptu map test sessions, submit your maps to the bot in the group chat), gamedays (scheduled map test sessions, submit your maps to a gameday thread when you see one), and other fun events. Our servers have a really neat feedback plugin, where during these test sessions, people can leave feedback by using commands in the game chat, and demos are automatically recorded, meaning you can watch and rewatch the gameplay of your map to see how it played. All of that can be found here: http://feedback.tf2maps.net/ (you can also find it at the top of the site, labeled "Feedback").

I hope this little introductory helps you get things started around here, and we hope to see you, and what you make, around here often. Have fun!

Welcome to the forums, Tallan!

If you didn't know UEAKCrash has a very good tutorial series on how to make maps both on youtube and here! Be sure to check it out!

This would not be much of a necessity for now but there's also this incredibly handy resource pack for mapping! Even Crash reccomends it in his videos. You'll find a game mode library there but first try to make the logic of a map from scratch so then you know how to tweak it in the future.

I know it may sound scary or overwhelming at first but it doesn't take too much time to learn :)

And I look forward to seeing your map! There is an important lack of farm/barn maps in TF2 and we need more of these!

Be sure to check mapping content packs at the bottom of the homepage! My personal favorite is Construction pack. Also there are more resources in Downloads section look there too, and separately the Bulletcrops pack.

After this, information about packing your maps may come in handy. Packing is basically putting custom content you used in the BSP, so people who play your map see it. There are programs like VIDE, which allows you to work with BSPs, and CompilePal, which is a separate cool tool for handling compiling with an auto-pack feature.

Repacking as we use this word is not the same! If you are told to repack your map, what you do is compress your map file so it's significantly smaller in file size, using special commands. This thread will help you do so.

Yeah the appear to be. They're fully aware of its existence - hell, they gave abs a community weapon - and I see no real reason, besides pride and lacking hdd space, for them not to use it.
