I'm new to mapping. So this may sound stupid, but, couldn't we put a massive nodraw box around maps? It would stop leaks from happening. (as long as you didnt screw up the box)

Yeah, you could, but it would be very very very bad for performance. This article explains the importance of doing skyboxes right (and why surrounding your map with a big hollow box is wrong).
