- Gain the favor of a Mayan snake god worshiped by a cult from the past and fire stuff in a temple.

Mercs fightin' each other inside a worn out temple devoted to Kukulkan the feathered serpent, a dragon god worshiped by a cult long gone. Definetly it's safe and stuff, right?

Not sure if "Midusa" is
a) a misspelling of Medusa, a greek snake monster
b) a cleaverish pun on Medusa and the "mid" of the map
either way, "koth_kukulkan" seems simpler, even if longer

It's a "clever" pun.

I would have thrown in that's it's supposed to be a temple after a really rainy storm, but I decided to throw the small watery areas into detailing stage.

What kind of temple-design will it be once it's done? Ruined-ish by time or fresh but moldy? Either way I think a few open (or opening, depending on what team has the cap) stage-hazards like pitfalls or "hot coals" (something with a bit of damage over time, kind of like the underworld zones in halloween maps).

Likely to be worn out due to time and the "rainstorm" aftermath I will do late alpha/early beta, I'm considering hazards, but I'm quite sure the layout is not close to final at all, seems like there could be a bit more open sections specially on the left sides.

Sounds good.
A bit more variation on the path's distances would be nice too, maybe even have one of the paths loop around one edge of the map, so you essentially come out towards the cap from the other team's side. A longer route for a better flanking position.

Yeah that's my plan for future versions depending on testing; adding a more outdoor like route to the control point.

What's up with puns in map names lately? If I didn't know the context, I would probably assume that it was a misspelling of Medusa. More importantly, though, I would definitely assume that the map was supposed to take place at a Greek temple instead of a Mayan temple, which isn't something you really want. Other than just renaming the map to "Kukulkan", which I agree would be fine, how about "Culebra" ("culebra" being a Spanish word for "snake")? Or "Castillo", based on El Castillo, a real-life temple to Kukulkan in Chicken Itza?

Or - and I recognize that this may be a long shot - you could embrace TF2's time-honoured tradition of naming maps by combining two words seemingly pulled out of a random word generator, and use "War Serpent", based on the ancient name Kukulkan was previously known as by the Maya. I only suggest it because - aside from being thematically appropriate - I think that KOTH War Serpent would be perhaps the edgiest map name in the history of TF2 :)

I chose Midusa due to several reasons:
a) The pun is somewhat "funny" (Berry made the pun, when I was asking for a interesting map name)
b) The name due to being a pun of Mid and Medusa uses Medusa to refer to mythology (thus referring Kukultan as a god in Mayan mythology)
c) Meduusa (close, but no cigar) is a Finnish word, which translates to jellyfish, thus referring to the soon to be watery, jungle, rainstorm aftermath setting.
d) It would be quite boring to name a map after a random word Google translated into another language like Spanish in this situation.
e) Imagine casual pub players playing Kukulkan if the Valve will go with the Mayann Project. "You wanna play Probed or Suijin, or that Kukulkan map?"
f) It's easy to mispronounce/misspell Kukulkan as Kukultan.
g) Two words mashed together for a map name? I'm fine with that, but calling a map War Serpent is one of the cringiest map names you could pull off.

Itza fair point. Map names are supposed to be easy to remember and recognize though, going on with a bizarre name will only make your map remembered for it's name, not what's in it.

Castillo it is. However I presume some history nerds are going to attack me on the internet for not replicating El Castillo in a video game.

(Note: The bsp is still called Midusa. I will not waste my time rebuilding cubemaps, packing custom content again and repacking it again. So to avoid any confusion, that is why.)

Don't worry, people aren't going to attack you for not making it look like El Castillo any more than they're going to attack Itza, Tenochtitlan, Tikal, Nakum, or Yucatán for clearly not taking place in any of those locations :D

Also, in regards to your previous comment (I didn't "Google translate" anything, btw, I am fluent in Spanish), since the Mayans lived in modern-day Mexico, it makes a lot of sense to use one of the Spanish words for snake/serpent. Trust me, I wouldn't have suggested the Hungarian word for snake ;)

Btw, it's pretty cool that this map's theme ties into your name, Viper. :) I'm guessing that was intentional?

Yes it actually was quite intentional. I wondered was there a Mayan snake god, so I found Kukulkan and got inspired by that. I did however mix up the Aztec cultists worshiping their snake god.

I'll definetly stick to this name, itza kinda like a sibling map to Itza.

I'd argue no on that, if only because this is a Mayann update, not a Mexicann update (although that would also be interesting). Also, I'm sure the irl Maya decendents aren't to pleased with the language of their conquerors being plastered all over their things.

There's definitely going to be a premium on short, authentic, pronounceable names, but that comes with the update territory.

Depends I guess, however this map is kind of like a homage to the El Castillo temple in Chicken Itza (It's a temple made for Kukultan the snake god). It's still a relevant name for the update.
