Yeah...on and off for a few months ive been trying to get this working...namely to host a steam server

I have the correct ports enabled, (27015), ive set my router to accept WAN ping requests, ive got the static ip set up correctly and the ports are directed to that ip.
Ive got my router set up for a virtual server (no idea if that means anything or not).
Ive set the hardware firewall in the router to its weakest range, namely it accepts anything using the specific ports ive opened. Then I also disabled the software firewall on my computer.

These setting worked a few days ago, but they have for some reason stopped working...
In light of that ive tried most combinations of enabling and disabling the settings ive listed above as well as briefly entering dmz mode, all to no avail...so now im stumped...

basically ive been hosting a playthrough of hl2 through synergy with my friends...and now its at a standstill

im sure someone here has an idea what im doing wrong...
im using winxp 32 bit, and a D-Link wireless router in g mode...

Sorry to dissapoint if you thought this might be an answer in this reply. But i just thought i'd add i've been having the same problem hosting a TF2 server and testing my map with a few friends.

First time it worked.. but now no go. I've been told it may be my hardware firewall. But it's a tricky business removing it so i'm leaving it untill i can afford for my computer to temporarily kill itself before i try touching anything that sensitive.

I'll be keen to hear a clean answer for this.

for your reference, more likely then not a hardware firewall is your router
if you check out your settings you should be able to find a firewall section

Mm, well i'll be looking into it of course, i don't doubt that's the more likely case. This is only one step in a line of adjustments i'm gonna need to tweak to make sure absolutely nothing should be going wrong.

The only reason i say that is because it gives me a lot of network troubles.. including hosting virtual networks that others can't detect. Since Nvidia's hardware firewalls have the knack for being eratic in what they do and don't let through. Something they let through one day it may decide to not let through the next.

It confuses me

dunno about synergy but the classical problem in TF2 is to have sv_lan 1 set, write "sv_lan 0" in the console and "map whatevervmap" to restart the server so it takes effect.

and when u've hosted a server with "create server" inside TF2 friends can't connect via friendlist. They have to connect via the console with "connect yourIP;password yourpassword" if u wanna know serverip write status in the console when the server is running.

Commons:

1. Hosting listenserver sux, run dedicated.
2. Ports
UDP 1200
UDP 27000-27016
UDP 27020
TCP 27030-27039
TCP 27015

3. sv_lan

4. NEVER EVER USE "map" command, use "changelevel"

5. Dynamic lan ip <- that sux. See router docs.

6. Firewall <- just allow incoming/outgoing traffic from that ports.

7. TF2 is damn smart, so it sometimes changes the game port from 27015 to 27016 or whatever. It's often due to "map" cmd or trying to host listenserver and dedicated at the same time. Start dedicated, then open tf2, ffs don't run any map, connect via Lan tab.

If you were just looking to play with friends, there's no better option than Hamachi. It simply connects various IPs together in a LAN stye network, and gives people a new IP (that actualy works) to connect to.

4. NEVER EVER USE "map" command, use "changelevel"

the map command makes the server restart which is exactly what u want after you have entered sv_lan 0 to make sure the command works

ha...i remember hamachi...used to use it for a project i was working on
anyways...i actually got it working again
I opened a virtual server for every port, its a pain in the ass because you can only open one port per entry...

and i wrote up a listenserver.cfg (have to use listen server because for some reason the dedicated does not have access to the map we are on) the last synergy update deleted the server cfgs, and somehow my external ip had changed

but yeah, it now works
