Is this an issue within Hammer?

So apparently if you select your whole map via map properties then shift drag/copy and paste for symmetrical maps it crashes Hammer. However if you select the whole map by doing a box with the selection tool then pressing Enter doesn't crash Hammer.

(I struggled with that for a hour or so before figuring out how it works.)

It's because when you open the Map Properties dialogue you are also selecting the map itself (or the 'world entity'), and not just all the brushwork and entities inside the map. That is the first entity in the VMF, if you open it in a text editor, and it is the umbrella entity under which all the map's entities live. Its properties define basic things about the map. Obviously, you can't have more than one map in a map. Duplicating it in the same VMF is like matter occupying the same space as itself in a different time.

Yes. Like when Torchwood brought the Cybermen and the Daleks in to our world and The Doctor lost Rose.

Or Edit > Select All.

For mirroring your map you may find it beneficial to draw a large skip brush over it that is aligned with a large grid size like 128. The grid snapping on the resulting copied and mirrored part will use your skip brush for its alignment, so you can put it in to place more easily.
