I'm a little bit of a novice when it comes to TF2 themed maps with detail.

I'm used to themed maps for other gamemodes for a community.

I'm trying to recreate a "volcano" in hammer, but as you can see this just looks wrongterrible:

Any ideas or techniques you guys can point me to on this? I have a map layout in mind however as said I am not too good with the detail.

And yes this is an "attempt" towards the Mayan update.

Uh.. no.

I was thinking about using them, but wasn't too sure on whether I could shape it right.

Best thing to do would be to create a 3x3 cube grid, remove the middle one then make all the top and (visible) inner faces displacements. Then select them all, go into the material selector then to the displacements section and subdivide it before changing them to make the right shape.

Also make sure if you don't use displacements that that hole isn't carved and instead you made an arch with very wide edges and used the clipping tool to clip it to fit in the square hole.

Pretty much any type of terrain is going to need to be displacements. You do not have the same level of control over brushes to create realistic looking terrain (or volcanoes) and no surface is perfectly flat, especially terrain.

Does this look any better?

I think so, though I will probably improve the shape a bit more.

Thank you for your help, the rest should be pretty simple now.
