Is there a way to use it, or alternative besides a prefab? I remember the pd_sawmill map had something similar.

It works just fine. I use it to link in my stuffed relays that I generate using a custom program.

Func_instance is in tf2. just create a instance vmf, make func_instance and reference the vmf. Pd sawmill actually uses vmms, which is a slightly different thing and fub wrote a tutorial on that somewhere i think.

Just wondering, because the dev wiki says it's not available for tf2.

The dev wiki is severely outdated; instances were broken when TF2 first launched but a later update fixed them.
