The Bat Signal dances on a grim night sky above Gotham's police department, as a grim winged figure descends to the rooftop, where Commissioner Gordon waits, smoking a big pipe. He puffs on it grimly.


"I came as quickly as I could, Commissioner. Who is it this time? The Joker? The Riddler? Butt-Pants? Is Butt-Pants on the loose?"


"It's more important than that, old friend," says the Commissioner, grabbing his big pipe with both hands and lowering its weight slowly, with effort, to his side. "I want you to look at these community submissions."


A grim silence hangs in the air.


"What?"


"I said I want you to look at—"


"No, I heard you. It's just that I just raced over from a prison break where I singlehandedly incapacitated ninety-six armed guys flawlessly, and then on the way here I also stopped Two Face and his goons from robbing a bank. They were armed too, by the way. And they had tasers. And there was a Medic with them, so every time I took one of them out he'd just revive the idiot again."


"Hm. That sounds frustrating."


"Yeah, I know, I was there. Point is I'm a little busy tonight. So when I see a Bat Signal in the sky, I'm assuming you need to tell me Catwoman shot the moon out of orbit or Penguin blew up the President or something. Not that you want me to look at community submissions."


"I just thought you'd want to be a part of—"


"I am five seconds from kicking your ass right now, Jim."

Those hats at least don't completely and utterly break the look / pallet of the characters. The shades are close, but they still keep it within bounds.

I just really hope cosmetics are turned off in competitive, or at least limited to pre 2015 shit like that banana hat (but we all know that won't happen)

I use a mod to turn them off. I absolutely can't stand them anymore.

I just don't understand what you're upset about.

The characters of tf2 are specifically designed to look a certain way from a distance so players can tell who they are. This includes the way they walk, jump, and look. What they're saying is how these items will fuck with the look of the character models at a distance.

I don't see how that would be a problem. Class identification is based more on size and posture than anything else. The only thing I would question is the cape, since it might seem similar to a medic's coat, but I'm not aware of any medic coats that are black.

It's not just that either, they're just plain ugly and ruin the way the game looks. You guys may be fine with this game being a stupid meme but i for one hate it, I don't design maps with that shitty visual design theory and neither should you.

Ultimately it comes down to personal preference. Some people like cosmetics, some people don't.
And not only that, the type of cosmetics. I have no problem with cosmetic items as long as they follow a certain rule.

To me nearly any hat is ok to be used. Even though some are ugly most are still fine. Hats to me are a form of identification. Does he wear a potato hat? Then thats most likely a spy disguised as me. Does he wear an unusual of type X, then its most likely player Y or a spy. On that part hats are actualy a very good adition although it made it slightly harder for spies.

For cosmetic items i again dont see a problem with cosmetics that preserve the general class setting. The MvM backpack for the pyro, canteens, medals etc all dont realy mess with the general class layout. Again its a form that identifies a player. However, once it gets parts sticking out at a wrong scale (ie. the bat wings for the pyro) then it becomes a bad thing since it affects the shape of the class in a significant way. Although with the pyro you can still identify him.

However, the banana hat (just like the area 514 hat) set the shape of the head to a diffirent size and shape. These are examples of poor design. And to me these should be blockable. But these thigns still share 1 thing: its just the head and for that reason only does harm a sniper (and to me thats not realy a bad thing to begin with - but that has to do more with sniper hate). The soldier cape on that is one of the worst possible things on that as it makes the body get a diffirent shape.

To me the thing valve should do is put all items that dont follow the general shape behind the halloween wall. However, with that make the halloween a general configuration option which accepts a setting system like this:
Visible by default (dropdown): Yes/Only on friends/No (Default: No)
Extra options (checkboxes):
- Visible during full moon or halloween (Default on)
- Visible in MvM Games (Default off)
- Only accept hats (Default off - when on any non-hat item is used effects tied to them are still used - ie community particle effects or voice lines)
- Apply special features (Defaults on - these are the low/high pitched voices players can recieve from a set or the heavy tutu set voice lines)
(these mimic the current requirements)

Valve is not going to restrict item usage or allow them to be disabled with cvar no more than they currently are restricted. That's just not viable option for them. Why would people buy keys and use the items anymore if no one else cannot see the items no longer? They wouldn't. Doing limitation like this will affect game popularity and revenue, which they don't want go. Atleast i wouldn't.

Lets face it, this game is 8 years old. If they had idea of silhouettes breaking player form and not introducing stuff that breaks that, it's long gone. There's several items already that go against that rule and more will come if they fit into the game, as in if Valve folks like the items enough and community too, they will be added. I don't like the banana hat at all, but it's in the game.

Mhm. They're never going to add a disable-cosmetics option.

I mean, wouldn't you think they'd have added it back in 2011 when the complaints regarding Demopan etc started circulating?

Same goes for Dota 2 and CSGO. Part of the allure in buying cosmetics, for some people, is having garish loadouts. Not really the same if people choose to have them disabled.

Consider also that amassing garish cosmetic items and making other people look at them is like most of the point of playing the game now to a lot of people. Why else would they spend all their time idling in "trade servers" instead of actually playing the game, even now after idling barely counts for anything? And Valve feels obligated to pander to that segment of the userbase.
