Disclaimer: This post is as much for me as for you! Hopefully, after a bit of feedback I will be motivated to continue mapping, as I find this to be a very slow process! :blush:

Tentative title is pl_vertigo, if its not taken already.

I know how valve like to build vertical enviroments (Lost Coast, start of Ep 2 in HL2; Badlands and Badwater in TF2), and I like the idea. This then, is a vertical pl map. The Bomb will begin by being hoisted by a crane, then transferred to a cart for the 2nd section, and crane again for the 3rd.

Red starts at the top of the map, and can quickly descend via a few water filled pits.

The first section. Bomb starts in little courtyard behind the grey roof. The path track can be seen snaking up to the cart in the top right. Water pit is on the bottom right. Tower on the left provides good vantage for Blu if they can capture it!


Overview of the tunnel section. The shaft on the right is another water drop for red


Any thoughts on how vertical maps may play, or possible problems with such are appreciated. Hopefully I will post some in game shots next week!

How is BLU going to be able to stand by the bomb as it's hoisted by the cranes? If you add a little platform or something--how is BLU going to be able to get back on it after they die/get knocked off?

There's another map that does this really well using a CP. Your team stands on the CP to lower the cart onto the track before it begins. The map was pretty, but had a lot of glitches and balance issues, so I forgot the name of it.

So then the map's basically like a single-point CP map with a ridiculously long cap time and a bomb for a progress indicator?

Perhaps you should try it before making assumptions? The CP moves the cart down to the tracks relatively quickly. Once it's on the tracks the CP doesn't do anything... it functions as a normal payload map. It's an easy way to make vertical jumps on payload maps.

The track the bomb follows is fairly close to the cliff face, which has a path up it to the tunnel section. Blu follows the bomb up through the building on the left, up the cliff and through the tunnel.

Its possible you could ride it part of the way, but it won't be necessary. Part of the red defence will be to try and knock Blu off the cliff!

Ha, nice. I'm actually working on a pl map by the same tentative title. I was just about to make a wip thread for mine when I saw yours.
At first you scared me...I thought you were using the same idea too! Luckily for me, that is not the case. I don't know that I really expect my map to become some famous map, so I think for now at least we can both call ours pl_vertigo.

You really should find a different title asap, just because if you try and release your map, even only as an alpha or beta, there could be problems. :-(

Well, I guess I'll see if I can think of another title. Other than that, maybe we rock paper scissors for it?(ha).

Really though, I don't want it to come down to a "I had it first". I'll think of something else or Cinnamon Whirl and I can come to an agreement.
