Ok... the theme of the 5th mapping contest is "Badwater is Bad". So... Why?!? What's bad about it?

Is it the level layout?

Is it the texturing?

Is it the pacing?

Is the detail work?

Yell out people. Why is Badwater Bad?!? So we have a ruler to measure against for the contest!

On a playability level badwater is pretty good but its nowhere near the usual standards of valve's detailing work, as shown in that thread

Ok. so Badwater isn't the best detailed map, but has decent gameplay. So the payload contest is to make a better looking payload map than Badwater?

The contest has nothing to do with badwater other than the fact we're looking for a badwater style (that is, single-stage payload) map.
As mappers we have high standards for visuals, most of us really enjoy playing on badwater since its a good map but a lot of us silently weep inside when we see some of the terrible detail work.

I don't know what you mean by that Fatony; I enjoy all of Valve's maps for their gameplay. Well.. maybe not Gravel pit, but i can forgive one bad seed, especially when there are plenty of other maps to choose from.

I do however dislike how instant spawn servers ruin that gameplay by making people think that every Valve map stalemates. That playing the game for anything other than kills is futile.

It is also my understanding that Orange maps are played by 14 yr old CS players with twitchy trigger fingers. But, orange maps have no place in this discussion, this has nothing to do with them.

Now I may be a 14 year old myself, but from what I understand, orange maps are the kinds of maps that are made with Dev textures. This is okay when it comes to alpha maps, right? But not with finalised ones?

To be honest, I kind of like the simple feel of maps made with dev textures.

While a lot of players do like orange maps, most mappers frown on it though because since the maps are so basic it takes little to no effort to make, so alot of the people who do make them tend to be lazy, and put out poor "my first map" maps, which make the mapping community as a whole look bad because some player's first experience with customs is one of those.

Sometimes though Ive found orange maps that are well made and enjoyable to play, not many though.

I like Badwater -- especially the view directly out of blue spawn, blue metal against bright rocks. The only thing i find annoying detail wise is the fastlane-style pop-out windows. How hard is it to to a quick and dirty carve?

Valve is not infinite container of creativity.

We aren't talking creativity... sticking windows in buildings and connecting conduits to something aren't exactly new and creative ideas.

Yeah, its not the creative aspect of it, (untill perhaps the very very end bit) its about the terrible quality of work like the windows sticking out, the conduits just ending, that seam between a cliff and a wall... etc etc

it happens with low grav i believe, you can do the same tricks on any other payload map
