Hourences, a very active and talented envoronment artist, has posted the results of his survey on his site. A very interesting read, but if you are impatient, just scroll down the page for the many, many charts, with answers from about 1000 participants.

Thanks for compiling this, Arhurt! Note the most common source of frustration in MP maps: Getting stuck on geometry. Get those clip brushes on, set those models to non solid (at least the small ones)!

Asked about when they first started creating levels, the results were very balanced. Thirty-six percent of the level designers have had more than 8 years of experience and had created their first level during the last millennium

Who here joins me under this category? :thumbup1: Though it's probably only by a matter of days and weeks for me to be fair.

Also..

Forty-nine percent became professional level designers by starting out in the mod community. Only 18 percent graduated from a game development course.

Ones portfolio speaks for itself.

Professional level designers are most frustrated by
"Direct superiors who do not understand level design"
:cursing: I get teh same thing when being commissioned for artwork.

Arhurt didn't get all this data...

Anyway, very interesting. I also find it interesting that
When building a level, the majority prefers to build it all by themselves (61 percent). However, when asked about whether they should be allowed to work exclusively on a level (no teamwork), 77 percent did not think this was a good idea.
Sort of a fence sitting opinion on the collaboration idea... But I still don't think that multiple people working on one thing isn't the most coherent decision make

I think the thing is, in a commercial product, where you definitely have a bunch of people that you know and are competent designers, you're comfortable with designing a level with them. However, if it's a project with some person you don't know over the internet, a personal project, there's more of a tendency to work by yourself, and have ironclad control over your level.
