Thanks guys for all your encourgement! I have got the basic layout and look of the log storing place (know as "The Lean"). Its full of alternate paths and such. Ill get some photos up in like 3 hours or so.

Looks good, perhaps a bit too bright though. Something about the lighting just seems 'off'

even a combo of the ladder and boxes might do nicely. but if i had to choose id say boxes, or maybe the ladder. the stairs look out of place imo.

Excellent work! I like the map very much. Looking forward to playing it.
About the Poll: my vote goes for the boxes. They fit in there good. Though I would take out the roofing slate at the top of "tower" of boxes and replace it with something else... Something made of wood... Another pallet maybe? :)

This looks really good!

I'd say the boxes are best, but you should make them look a bit more climbable (while, at the same time, not making it seem all too convenient).

Maybe you could combine both the boxes and the stairs like this.

You gotta rotate the stairs so they don't stick out as much. Then put some boxes and metal (or whatever) underneath.

I vote stairs, but turn them 90 degress, so they run parallel to the building edge. Looks a bit awkward with them sticking so far out from the building.
Alternatively, if you want to avoid jumping, but still use the boxes idea, can't you cover them in a ramp-shaped brush. Then make that brush invisible but solid. I don't know the name, but I'm sure there's a brush material designed specifically for this kind of thing. That way, the physics sees a nice smooth ramp that follows the rough outline of the boxes.

EDIT: What Jazz said above, whilst I was typing (for a long time...!)

I agree with Jazz and Banni. The boxes look best between the ones you've done, but stairs turned 90 degrees would definitely be best. Switchback stairs with a landing would look even better.

Sorry i didnt see your post there, you probably are getting the same "Fullbright" effect that i felt. Its due to some of the props not casting shadows (like the trees) I will be fixing this on the final compile. But for now there shadows are disabled. Also the HDR will make the lighting look much better. (as you can see by the new stairs picture)

I voted for the ladder, it seems more natural than the others.

Also, the map looks wonderful, can't wait to play on it! :D

I voted for the ladder because it seems like more of a logical way to access a roof than the stairs. Unless there was something the stairs led to (like a large building you can't go in where the fence is).

I don't like the log, but think the ladder is weird in a similar way. Most likely a laddetr would be leaned against the side of the shed, not at an angle against the corner.

But I probably should've voted boxes as I like that best now that I look again. It is likely boxes would be stacked next to a shed. It is unlikely someone would have access to the roof like ladder or stairs unless they are working on it or they store the ladder there.

I guess my initial prob with the boxes was that The angled one on top and the angled piece of metal seem weird, almost at odds with gravity. And the box almost makes it look like it blocks that path.

It seems to me that those set of stairs is a bit too steep. My suggestion for the stairs is to have either a fire escape like set of stairs, or make a building with stairs inside that reach to the roof. But for coherence reasons, you might want to put something important up there, such as a satellite, air vent, or something. Otherwise it doesn't make sense to have a staircase in the first place :p

You migth want to turn the bloom down in your map, it's quite overpowering.

M only gripe with the boxes is that they would be incredibly fiddly to traverse. constantly jumping onto each crate. It's the most annoying section of Dustbowl that is.
