It's been over a year since the last major contest begun (Mercs vs. Aliens), and nearly a year since it ended so it's definitely high tide for the next major contest. Some private discussion has been going on for a little bit, and we've nailed down what the contest will entail and all and now all that's left is the fine details.

I'm holding out on leaving out the exact bits of the contest until it begins, but basically this thread is here so I know if there's anything in here that's a big mistake to be doing, and to allow us to discuss the following (and more).

Minor Points for discussion
  • Medieval mode is allowed
  • Collaborations are allowed
  • The contest will utilize the regular prize routine
  • I plan for the contest to end around New Years (either just before or just after, January 2nd/3rd or December 28th/29th being my ideal date). This is because it is the most comfortable time for me to quickly set up the judging and review all the maps to ensure it's all in order (otherwise I'm back in education and busy with that)
  • The contest will require you to work with a wide (but still specific) variety of modes in a unique way

Judging
I'm currently completely open to suggestions on how judging will work. My current plan is that if it's a small pool of maps (<20) then public voters will do the standard category voting (each map is given several scores of 1-10 for individual categories), and if it's a larger pool a process of elimination will be in place to lower the numbers, then the first method will come into place for the finalists.

Beginning and End Dates
This is the primary reason I made this thread for discussion: what is the most comfortable time for an end date for everyone that's around the New Year time? I'm hoping anything is fine within Winter/Christmas Break for anyone in school/education that doesn't conflict with major holidays (25th and 26th of December, 31st and 1st of January) but of course asking never hurts. I'm also under the assumption the contest should begin as soon as possible, which in that case it will as soon as all the details are ironed down (and a few smaller matters are sorted).

Anyway everything here is public and open for discussion (any staff please be discreet with details not on here for now, please) so feel free to bring up anything on these.

I still like my old idea of "follow the map" - design a map that fits the map shown in the map loading screen.

We already have a "theme" (not like the 72 hour contest themes looks at Frozen) for the contest settled down, the points I've listed are what's left to sort out

I understand the whole winter break thing being a draw, but there's no way in hell I want to think about mapping and potentially meeting a deadline with Thanksgiving/Christmas/NYE stuff going on. That might just be me, because I have 3 sets of parents to visit and none of them live in my city, but still.

Understandably details are scarce right now but I have to ask. Are we restricted to a certain theme or gamemode? Or is this going to be more open?

There will be no theme restrictions, but there will be gamemode restrictions that are very loose as well as the requirement for something additional (which is also very loose, and I don't mean in the way of MvA's "destroy mothership" rule).

If the contest is going to start pretty soon and the holidays mentioned would obstruct the judging process, I see no reason why the submission date wouldn't be moved to the beginning days of January- if the submission date falls in late December, then no judging will probably be done until January anyway.

At this point I'm just so hyped up I'd like to start as soon as possible.

(The requirement is a train)

  • Medieval mode is allowed

Fuck yeah. But is Mann vs Machine allowed?

I like it when the judging process is handled by actual judges, at least for smaller numbers of entries. Having judges usually means you get extensive feedback on your entry.

I'm with tyler on the dates, I really don't want this to happen at that time of year because I've got lots of personal matters to take care of cropping up around then, but maybe it'll be fine? Ideally it'd start sometime in mid-January.
