Where do posted maps go?

What happens to maps once they are posted on here, will they every be played on servers? I'm thinking of making one and I just want to wonder what happens to an average map.

Edited: I'm asking what happens to an already posted map, not posting a map. :p

You'll first post your map in the Map Workshop Subforum on our site.

If you want it tested, you'll need to have a VIP or Staff member upload your map to the server. Then, you can either post the map in a gameday on our Events Subforum, or if you participate in chat, you can get it thrown into an impromptu test.

You can post you map in the Maps Workshop.

Maps in this section do not need to be complete and can be in any stage. From there people can pick up and play your map as they choose and provide feedback. If you'd like to have you map specifically tested you can check out this post.

When you map is complete and in the Release Candidate form you can submit it to be added to the Maps Showcase through this thread. Your map will be reviewed by site staff and may be accepted if it is seen as acceptable. Don't worry, you can still fix new bugs and release new updates in this section. Maps in this section are featured on the front page and are much more likely to be played. I also believe they are on rotation for the TF2 Maps Servers.

Deep question.

Most fade to obscurity unless you personally have an active server to host or it goes official. Generally speaking I say you should map for you, but I feel the same way, I map to see my work played. It's a difficult thing, but don't be discouraged about it.

If you stay active in the community, your map is most likely to keep getting tested during it's testing phase. Afterwards, the new maps workshop, an agreement with a server owner, or a competitive following are your best bets for continued play!

Or, if Valve keeps these campaigns up, we could see a 6 month at a time switch in and out of community maps. Hoping to get your maps into a campaign could totally be realistic.
I was speaking with Uncuepa about it, and i suggested that he push to get his Smissmas map at least late beta/early rc by summer (in australia) to have it as a candidate for the the obviously upcoming christmas update/campaign. That might be a new goal for mappers, as it is definitely that of those in the mapcore/csgo community, and it's not at all realistic.

Yes, 98% of maps are dumpstertrash (like mine) and don't deserve to be in the game. But if you are dedicated to the map and it plays well, there is a much better chance for it to get into the game than the same time last year. Also the map workshop and map showcase are unrepresentative of quality. I have seen a bunch of maps in the workshop that could be in the game, and we can't really count the thousands of alphas that never went anywhere as serious attempts as getting them into a shippable state.
