If you also release them for public use before the contest starts.

You can use content you make yourself without releasing it. However, if it's not your own, then it has to be public. This is a rule I plan on changing in the future (so that all custom content has to be public), but I don't want to change the rules after already announcing the contest.

I am always told that you can't use content you made before the contest without releasing it before the constest starts. There's too many edge cases between "working on your map before the contest starts" and "working on private custom content before the contest starts".

Then you've probably been told wrong. The rules are just a copy/paste from the previous 72hr contest (albeit reworded in some spots). I believe the rules are made pretty much for people who have "signature" posters that they don't want to share, amongst other things.

If the edge cases become an issue, then they'll be eliminated in the future. I want the rules to be as lax as possible, but if people can't handle that, then things will have to be made more strict.

Pretty much.

No. You're allowed to use any custom content that is your own without releasing it. However, custom content that is anyone else's must be made public. That is to say, your modeler friend can't make models for you without giving them to everyone.

I think the fact that this has been confusing people for multiple pages is a sign that it needs to be revised for the next contest.

I've added a flowchart to the main post to reduce confusion. A ban on any non-public custom content will probably come in future contests just to reduce confusion (and also so people can stop worrying about the loophole). I don't plan on changing the rules for this contest, however, since it has already been announced.

If anyone feels that the loophole really is a problem, feel free to abuse it. I kinda want to see someone make a map entirely out of models.

I think the flowchart might be all the revision that's needed. Just including that will probably help a lot in the future.
