Whatever, after sleeping this whole thing off, I decided I don't want the veteranship anyway.

There are a bunch of people who came here before me, who should've gotten the status WAY before me. But, hey, if you give something to someone, no matter what it is, they're gonna be upset.

I'm okay with being L6 for now. Let's just put all this god damn negativity under the bridge.

I, for one, look forward to the changes whatever rank I come out as. I've tried to keep a ratio of more than 1 like for every 2 posts for a long time now and I like to think that's kept me saying things that matter, be it helpful, informative or witty and I thank posts under those exact same criteria.

So yeah, I support all of the changes made to tf2maps.net and it's awesome that Geit has had time to get this ball rolling. Viva la revolucion, etc.

As a donator, you get to select a custom rank, don't you?

I'm uncomfortable with the idea that post count solely attributes to receiving a rank that declares one a respected member or an expert. Actual respect and expertise are the only things that should qualify someone to be labelled as such. Applying those terms based on quantity, and not quality does them a disservice, and the people who genuinely deserve them.

If you must display milestones of respect, at least base them on thanks received, and do not mix it with expertise. No one should feel compelled to post rubbish to hit a milestone.

You also have the option of disabling the rank system. It sounds unthinkable but it may be very beneficial. A few years ago, whilst running a vB community I did that, and removed the display of post counts from forum posts. We were building a community where posters focused on genuinely useful, meaningful and interesting discussion, so felt that the public display of such statistics would influence users to post rubbish to get their numbers up. We kept the built-in vB respect system to give users a quick way to show their appreciation without having to post. Real respect was earned from posting well, and the rivers ran with milk and honey, and the grass was made of chocolate, and... so on.

At the moment, the changes feel a bit hit or miss. You staff could sit down and have a chat, put some ideas across the table and give serious thought to culling things that just get in the way. Take a look at the way other discussion systems work, consider how a community of mappers would be best served in the future. Then maybe have a public discussion, asking for ideas and opinions. Then try things out and settle on what's best.

I like the idea of getting rid of the ranking system.

It encourages people to listen to everyone, and actually do things.

When I first started out, I was like: "oh this is a lvl 3, forget him, oh, here's a lvl 5! I'm sure he has good feedback!" I think that that kinda stuff is pretty stupid, and once you DO get past that, it has literally no use.

I'd be happy to see it cut.

EDIT: Also, I feel it should be cut because it's something worthless to care about. Like hats.
I mean I was just a moment ago worried I'd lose my lvl 6 rank after an update, RIGHT AFTER we just finished an argument about it! I don't want to have to worry about it, and people shouldn't be thinking about it. Please, get rid of it.

We did sit down and had a lengthy discussion about all sorts of site related topics just the other day. That's how a lot of changes came about. We did decide to keep post count visible. As for rankings, I'm not a fan of the names for each level either. If anyone can suggest something better, we'd be glad to take them into consideration.

VETERAN CHECK GO | EDIT: Sweet still got it

Also thanks for removing the thanks post necessity from the threads. That tripped me up once, but I came out of it with more thanks due to it.

I'd prefer the ranking system be removed altogether, but if you do change it to thanks, then here's my idea:

L1: The Helpee
L2: The Helped
L3: Junior Helper
L4: Helper
L5: Helpful Helper
L6: Spectacular Helper
L7: Admirable Helper
L8: Handyman

One little thing that I've noticed that may (or may not!) be a problem:
Giving ranks out on a basis given by other people could theoretically result in a competitive situation in which people hold back giving thanks because they don't want a user to become "better than them".

Again, just a possibility.

I don't know that this is a problem - we never had people spamming posts for posts sake in the old system.

Oh, and I should probably mention:
The reason I put it the way I did was because people are generally labeled "helpers" instead of differing levels of members, because instead of people being better than one another, everyone is instead spoken as how much they help other people.

Obviously, I wouldn't qualify very far.

EDIT: Oops, double post. Sorry.

Why not have the ranks be named after strange ranks?

Boy this sure stayed ontopic for like four posts

HQDefault, think about what's been pointed out to you and why. If you'd like to talk about it, feel free to PM me or any of the other admins on Steam and we'll try to answer any questions you may have.

We'll make a proper thread about forum changes soon, so you'll all be able to voice your opinions on said changes there.
