Remember the rumors of matchmaking in the works? Turns out there’s substance to them after all.

A few months back a group of us (event organizers and production staff) began an email exchange with the TF2 team in an attempt to establish a more open channel of communication between the team and the competitive community. That dialogue spawned a request for a list of prioritized* feature requests that would most benefit the community, to which we responded that we’d benefit from:

A CS:GO-style stream list integrated into the main game menu
Matchmaking
Bug fixes/QOL improvements (some of which we gathered from this thread)

* taking into consideration both ease-of-implementation and magnitude of impact on the community

We were ultimately granted an opportunity to drop by and chat if we were in the neighborhood, so naturally we scrambled together a group of notable west-coasters (myself, extine, mana, b4nny, Seagull) to meet with the TF team.

That meeting was yesterday, and to our surprise…

…we’re getting all that we asked for.

I’m sure some of the nuances of the conversation (particularly regarding matchmaking) would get lost or misinterpreted in text, so I’m leaving the full debrief to this Friday’s Fully Charged episode which will feature a panel of meeting-attendees plus esports columnist Sam “oPlaid” Lingle. Feel free to leave any questions you might have in the event thread and we’ll answer them in the stream.

It’s 3 AM here and we’re all still wide awake from excitement, and if you’re reading this now, you should be too.

Get hyped!

So yeah. Valve does listen. Now let's Hammer (pun intended) it into their heads that we need a map workshop and an open Mann Co. beta program to test maps from the workshop when it gets implemented.

Let's hype a little.

EDIT In this video, eXtine goes into a little bit more detail. He also said something about a good time coming up for video makers. Wonder what that was all about.

I'm keen as fuck. Finally my friends and I will have something better to do than stomp pubs and change our names to stupid things.

As for the map workshop, it should work like some other games workshop content where you can publish your map on the workshop, and people can click download and simply have the map. This would work so well for servers, too. Select a gamemode, download the top 5 maps in that category. There would have to be some regulation, possible, otherwise you'll end up with a hundreds of trade and orange maps.

valve will need a map workshop if they want to have customs maps in matchmaking, there's no other way around it. whether the matchmaking is done on valve servers or community servers, you need a way to sync that content.

this is either the start of a map workshop or the death of map making. I still have enough faith in valve to think they'll at least get that right.

They've been saying "comp matchmaking is coming" for years now so I wouldn't hold my breath

I might check the game out again if the system is good and involves rebalancing of items based on the data they get

I will believe it when I see it. It's going to be some Highlander all unlocks bullshit I can assure you.

There must be some item whitelist included in the matchmaking. I can't imagine these guys in the video would be that hyped if Valve was stubborn enough to force all unlocks enabled.

From what I can tell, valve actually doesn't like highlander for matchmaking because it locks people into classes. I wonder what they're going to do.

This has me curious as well. It could just as well be possible that they end up making 4s the official format.

Who says they didn't come around on that statement?

Mine was never a definitive post to begin with. It even begins with such a disclaimer.

Even if it never sees the light of day, it should postpone the demise of comp TF2 by about 2 years.

The only information we really got from that stream was;

*It's not going to be highlander (thank god)
*It's going to be close to 6v6 or 5v5
*Weapon unlocks are still in the air

Also no Source 2 for TF2 anytime soon.

And 6s only completely killed my excitement for it.

Also they ignored any question about custom maps.
