Yo, I'm sure many of you have now heard about the TF2 Classic mod that's indev, and lots of things have gone on around that (positive and negative). As of yesterday, I'm the lead mapper on the TF2C team and I have plans that the mod should support live TF2 community maps, for several reasons:

  • Drawing in people who like the maps
  • Keeping people by having a *good* variety of maps
  • Encouraging TF2/TF2C mapping
  • Rewarding mappers with exposure, and testing/feedback from regular players too

And I'd like to know what maps everyone at tf2maps thinks are good, play well and look pretty (so not alphas, sadly. Betas, release candidates and finals).

Currently on the TF2C map radar is:
ctf_haarp
cp_tidal

cp_dusk
pl_waste
cp_sunshine
cp_snakewater

cp_process
tc_meridian
tc_strata
cp_vanguard
cp_furnace_creek

ctf_atrophy

Maps with strong interest to be added in bold

(we've not sought out permission for all of these yet, but before decisions are final I'm going to ask the creators of course)

What maps do you guys like, and what do you think of these?

We're also thinking of adding 3 or 4 maps, so the question is:
If you could pick 3 maps to be official in TF2, what would they be? (and sorry, we can't consider modes like PL, Arena, MvM etc. and I'm not sure about SD)

I notice you don't have any koth maps on that list: so I would say Arctic, Skyward and Dropdown for those.

Pl_barnblitz_pro isn't in the list.
Any particular reason?

I'm assuming because they are not vanilla tf2 gamemodes, the necessary entities and such were added later and this mod is based on vanilla tf2 source?

Yes, that's exactly the reason. Rumour among devs has it PL mode is almost done, but I can't vouch for that. When it is finished however there's a small plan to have a PL map pack, hopefully including the following:
pl_escarpment
pl_pier
pl_boundary
pl_halfacre

I'm pretty sure simulated koth is possible, like how it was originally made.

You could easily pm the map authors to modify it to acompany it.

It's good to see that snowplow and pier are going to be getting a little more attention.

Pier's in my 200% pile as long as Blade wants the map there, I personally love the map quite a lot.

I think I might have forgotten what this mod is. You really shouldn't have assumed that we all knew what it was.

I would recommend checking out all of the maps from previous contests. Especially the a/d ctf and plr contest. There should probably be more than just ctf_haarp on the list.

Although, that contest was a few years back. It might be difficult to contact the map makers.

Ah sorry, TF2C started out as a beta recreation, but expanded out in a few other directions (new modes, new weapons, 4-team etc.). That's pretty much all there is to it when you brief it up.

I've been looking through the CTF contest, it's incredibly hard to get people from there though there are some good maps.

Um... how can we play tf2 c?
Is it a mod as in "download a new game from internet/steam", or as in "tf2 custom servers w/ plugins"?

It's there first option but, believe me it's hard to install.
I have tried to install it 5 times and it doesn't work.

Does anything special have to be done to the maps or do they work as-is?

Any maps post-2014 have to be re-compiled because Valve changed the way prop_statics work, and they crash within TF2C because it wants the old prop_statics (pre-2014 maps still work vice versa though).

Um... how can we play tf2 c?

Pick up the base files here. You then download the latest major update, copy/paste the file structure over (materials merge to materials etc.), and then get the latest patch and merge that over what you have from the previous step (again, same folders merge) and it should function.

Edit: Update on this. We've got 2 maps officially in TF2C's first community map pack (to come later this month hopefully):

CP Furnace Creek by YM and Nineaxis

CP Tidal by Heyo

Quick question (not that I'll have anything in particular to do with it): Will community-made official maps have to be confirmed with their creator(s) for use in the mod, such as with cp_process?

Also, make sure that the textures in the maps that weren't available in the original TF2 base and aren't packed into the map itself are included in the mod base, if you haven't thought about this already!

Firstly, yes we have to get permission from the map-makers, sadly even on things like Turbine Pro (I've got a huge list of friend requests at the bottom of my friends list from this now) and this is the main thing holding me back from this pack (besides getting all the newer content in the mod).

And secondly, yes all content will be included with the mod unless the mapper asks us otherwise (none have so far).
