Making interesting geometry?

So, I'm starting to find that while I can make pretty decent layouts, I have trouble making good geometry. I'll make a layout that's good for gameplay, but pretty much devoid any detail (everything looking blocky, entire rooms with only one or two textures, ect).

So I guess my question is, how does one stop their maps from looking incredibly uninteresting?

a) Map from reference
b) Rip off other maps
c) Lots and lots of practice and effort

Add things poking out. Windows, doorframes, beams, sheds, balconies, random props, more than one texture per wall, tiny height variations, displacements and closed off areas that you can only look into.

Don't make them look like you can enter them. That's important.

Better yet - make them so you can't enter them! :p < I was actually being serious there, lot's of decorations outside the playable are can do wonders for your map.
