You should be able to do that with a 360 degree arch.

I might have misread the question.
A donutshaped hole is basicly a round hole with a cylinder in the middle.
1.
Create two cylinders with the brush tool to outline the donut shape. It's important that you don't scale the cylinders after you've made them.
2.
Make a square hole through the floor around the cylinders.
3.
Put in some square brushes that line up with the verticeces on the cylinder and the side of the floor.
4.
Use the clipping tool to cut each of those brushes into the shape of the cylinder.
5.
Copy those brushes and rotate them to make the rest of the donut hole
That does look nice, but how should one place the boxes? I feel that it depends on the exact count of sides in the cylinder.
You could also use the arch tool, and then use the vertex tool to merge and move the vertices into the square shape. No need for creating a bunch of cubes.

Yeah, the arch tool might be a better option, but i feel more comfortable using the cylinders to do it.This, and only this. really over-complicating things if you don't use the arch tool.

The end result is pretty much the same though.
