A few years ago I was addicted to using Hammer, I think I have close to 300 hours using it (which probably isn't much compared to people who are decent at making maps).

Anyway it all ended when I purchased an iMac... in the last couple of weeks I've been playing TF2 on it again and now I have the sudden urge to start mapping again.

So my question is.. do any of you use laptop to map? I have a Lenovo yoga laptop, which has pretty decent specs.. I can just see it becoming quite fiddly!

Also.. does Hammer work on Windows 8.1?

Thanks

Hmm, I think hammer will work on windows 8.1 and it will probably work on a laptop, just buy a mouse. But I'm not entirely sure.

I have a lenovo Y40 with 8.1. Yes it works, well, "works" and "hammer" aren't typically in the same sentence but as a baseline, it functions.

I have an ASUS ROG GL551JM, running Windows 8.1, and Hammer works as well as it should for a 32-bit program, and for it just being Hammer. Let's hope the Source 2 hype train delivers us some 64-bit action!

It's sometimes nice using Hammer on a couch or kitchen table instead of being confined somewhere. There, I said it, treason to all those 'workstation fellas.'

I have a brand spanking new MacBook Pro, the 15' model, with Windows 7 on it via bootcamp. I only use W7 for Hammer and SFM though. OS X is my main driver (including playing TF2).

I must say though, I also have a 2nd monitor and if I ever get to the srs level design phase (right now it's testing out things) I will use that one too.

I map on a fairly old Dell Inspiron 15R running Windows 7 with average specs and it does its job quite well. Granted, the compile processes tend to tie up my CPU to the point where every other program lags into oblivion, but it still finishes in a timely manner.

As someone spoiled in the screen real estate department, I couldn't imagine trying to map on a laptop.
As someone spoiled in the unemployed and broke as hell college student department, I couldn't imagine being able to afford anything with more than one screen.

And yes, I'm running a laptop running Windows 8.1 and Hammer works "perfectly fine".

Mate, not long ago I was (somewhat) happily mapping and animating in SFM on a 2011 13' MacBook Air.

It didn't go smoothly, but it worked.

I use a laptop but it's like... bad unbearable to many people but decent. It's a Samsung RV510-A09UK Notebook. It has quite the sleek design, light weight and energy efficient and a really REALLY nice keyboard, it's like your fingers are swimming in it unfortunately it's fragile. After prolonged gaming usage the W, A and D keys no longer "pop" back up when pressed they still are as sensitive and functional as before though. Also when I boot up the laptop it runs as fast as seen in the commercials!

It's specs are nice but what really holds it back is it's graphics CHIP a Mobile Intel(R) Series 4 Express Chipset Family. I can Play TF2 at around 20-30 FPS during fights. No FPS Config Used just some steam launch options such as -dxlevel 81 and -heapsize and default options. I've tried an FPS Config but my FPS fluctuates so much from 120 FPS to 20 FPS simply by just turning around no matter what, that messes up a lot of things like aim.

Hammer runs perfectly fine, unless say I open up a decompiled map with all those props and geometry, the 3D camera movement is quite laggy but everything else runs smoothly. Compile times seems okay.

SFM is completely out of the question.

But I did start playing TF2 on a MUCH worse Laptop though, lets just say the thing has 1GB of RAM(Crashes the Laptop quite often) and ran TF2 at MAX 15 FPS, with an FPS Config too. I was still able to market garden like a boss though!
