I propose an Arctic Theme Pack

So we have the Swamp, Construction and Japan theme packs which are all great, but I'm a huge fan of snow themed maps. I feel like there's a severe lack of content for snow themed maps which is why I would love to see an arctic theme pack.

I've just put together a list of things I think would be good additions to a snow/arctic theme pack.

TF2Maps.net Arctic Theme Pack

textures and stuff
- More snow blend textures to blend snow with a wider range of materials
- textures of brick/metal with snow on them (bricks aren't flat :v )
- Wayyy more snow overlays (overlays/snow_patch, overlays/snow_horizontalwood and overlays/snow_footsteps are real lame)
- actual ice textures
- new skyboxes for snowy/arctic environments

models etc
- a snowplow-truck
- an icebreaker ship (full-scale and skybox?)
- more stuff for interiors so that the mercs don't freeze to death (i'm thinkin radiators, space heaters, coats on hooks)
- more snow covered rocks and things
- snowy variants of objective props (payload cart, australium/intel briefcase etc.)
- more foliage
- maybe piles of snow? (displacements are a thing but ya never know)

particles
- way more and way better snow particles
- steam particles for vents and chimneys

i was also thinking we could possibly include some of cp_snowplow's assets (snow covered crates & barrels, that really nice cliff blend texture that YM made etc.)

I want to hear everyone's thoughts on this idea and would be super glad if people would be interested in contributing as this is something I really want to see happen.

I join you in this one there is not enough artic assets for mappers.

Yeah. I tried to make an artic, frosty map but their isn't enough assets. Snow blend on concrete would be nice.

The idea for more skyboxes is good an you could make something that resembles northen lights.
Or make the northen lights move like clouds

Yes please. There isn't nearly enough ice materials. Snow's less of a concern, but indeed not enough blended materials. And ice needs a very clear one that refracts in real-time so it actually has some depth to it.

I would love to contribute to this if I can, since I've accumulated a few ideas while working on my current map:

  • ice floe/iceberg models (with skybox variants)
  • rock models retextured as ice, maybe with a dusting of snow
  • frozen waterfall model
  • bare trees covered in snow

There is an existing snowy cart model in pl_boundary and I found it in the downloads section, so I think it would be worth asking for permission to include this in the pack.

Correction the cart was made to everyone to download and the maker ow boundary asked permission to use it. So ask permission from the maker of the prop not from the map maker.

Somebody be so kind and do this. Just... Not as a particle. Hammer's way of handling particles makes me not want to use them.

Normally that's implied when asking permission to use a model. I only mentioned the map to show the screenshot.

Yeah but it's all static and I feel like particles would be cooler because they could be moving and be all super cool and stuff.

I would enjoy it a lot more than just a lame ol' model any day.

I totally agree with you, but how many players are going to sit by and watch a moving skybox particle instead of playing the map?
