Having problem making custom texture

Got my texture all set to go - using vtfedit - but

when I export and use in my map the texture doesn't tile - it has black all around it.

I may be using vtfedit wrong - are there standard settings I should be using to get the tiling happening in hammer?

I should also have my texture resolution set to 72 dpi correct?

Edit: It's also my very first time making a custom texture and trying to use it

Do you have either of the clamp checkboxes set when you compile the texture? That's what immediately came to my mind.

Is the texture sized to powers of two? You might have some bizarre padding problem.

Not sure what the settings are - tried clamp on off - in fact have no idea what any of the settings should be - I tried clamp x/y (whatever they are really called am at work now) and then there was the clamp all.

Do you guys use standard settings and then tweak them as you go?

To clarify, all clamp settings should be unchecked, which is the default.

Just an addon - when making the texure is there anything I need to do to make the texutes turn into pyroland items if someone is wearing the goggles or is that more of an in game entity switch type of thing?\
