How do you guys get inspiration for a map. I just kinda make one then delete it because I think no one will ever see it.

Thanks.

I get my inspiration from lots of places. I think I'm fairly different here in this community in that usually I'll be inspired by a location or theme - like a Japanese temple, or a pirate cove, or wanting to do the granary theme - and work my map up from that. I try to think of gameplay spaces, points, structures that make sense for that environment and then fit them to tf2 from there. Consequently, this doesn't always work very well for gameplay, but it's a great starting point for me.

A good walk can really inspire me. But I'm weird like that.
I always have ideas. Just the thought that no-one will ever see the map is what makes me fail to make a map. I have 3 maps on my computer which I was gonna make but just kinda fell out of.

But people will see the map! You just gotta, y'know, make it first.

I basically think of a gimmick and make sure it follows my imaginary checklist:

Think of a gimmick

-Is it original?
-Does the idea feel fun and/or balanced in-game
-Can you expand on this gimmick, so it fits with the map

In my eyes, I think of a concept, a gimmick that fits that concept, and then make sure the gimmick works. :)

I can guarantee you, if you can get one of those to an alpha and post it in the Map Workshop, someone's going to see it! It doesn't have to be perfect - all you need is a map to start with, and we can help you develop it from there.

Inspiration seems to come in weird places for me. Sometimes, it's just about thinking "what if that was in TF2?"

90% of the contents of this folder are unfinished maps as VMFs, split into lots of subfolders for different games and purposes.
The rest are txt files for notes, particle stuffs and other things I forgot.

I think of how I want a particular part of the map's geometry to look, usually the center point. Once I am happy with I try to build the map around it in a way that makes sence to me.

... I am almost certain I am doing it wrong, but it works for me I suppose.
