Hey everyone!

I'm looking to get a new laptop this holiday season, and I've got my eyes on one in particular: the ASUS ROG GL551JM-DH71 . Here's a link to the Amazon page, and here's some specs:

  • Intel Core i7-4710HQ 2.5GHZ (Turbo to 3.5 GHz)
  • 1TB 7200RPM Hard Drive
  • 16GB RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB GDDR5 with Optimus Technology
  • 3x USB 3.0, 1x HDMI, 1x MiniDisplay. SDXC Card Reader. 802. 11 A/B/G/n. Gigabit Ethernet Port. 720P HD Webcam.
  • 15.6" Full HD Display. Aluminum Body ROG Signature Chassis.

Man, typing that in made me feel like a boss. :cool1:

And here's some of the needs I need to fill:

  • Generally good gaming (nothing too special, but better than the lag-on-low I'm at now)
  • High enough RAM and power for speedy 3D rendering in Blender
  • Of course, any specs that can improve my mapping! Because its all about what computer you have, right?

I'm really looking for the perfect combination of performance and cost-effectiveness (I honestly don't think I can find a much better laptop for just over $1000, for my needs). I'm not looking into purchasing a desktop, as I really do need the portability a laptop provides.

So, here's where you come in. There's probably not too much to say, but it would be very appreciated if you could just weigh in with any thoughts or comments down below. Just don't expect me to (or to be able to) change my mind about this!

Take a look at the newest Lenovo laptop. I have a friend that recently bought one, for only $900. It had a core-i7, GeForce 860m, 8GB of RAM, 1TB HDD (no SSD though).

Its a great laptop and its a bit cheaper.

For less that $1000 you could probably even add a solid state drive or more RAM.

Yeah, I definitely looked into that (in-store the other day, actually). In the end, I really felt like it wouldn't be best to sacrifice on that last 8GB of RAM, and I didn't feel comfortable adding it in myself or folding the service to do or. I also considered getting the SSD of the ROG (the ASUS ROG GL551JM-EH74 model), but for the price point, the function of the SSD, and the limited space (meaning that I would have to use external storage, which I just don't feel 'right' about), I opted for the my current decision.
