The future of TF2 as a whole?

I was talking with some friends about this yesterday, and a lot of them think that Valve aren't going to be making major updates anymore. Obviously there's End of the Line, and there's no telling just what that will be. And there's the supposed Spy vs Engineer update, which if true, has me probably the most excited I've ever been for anything TF2 related. But do you think that, in the long run, Valve are really gonna bother making more and more updates, as opposed to just making more hats/cosmetics/ect? I just find it hard to see them not doing updates anymore, since TF2 is still a huge source of income for Valve, and there's virtually no reason to make a TF3. But then, CS:GO is also a large source of income along with DotA 2. But in general, cosmetic items can only take a game so far, and I've seen a lot of people just flat out lose interest in TF2.

But what updates could day do at this point, that would actually rejuvinate the overall gameplay? The bumper cars in the new Halloween map are pretty cool, so I could see something of that nature becoming a new source of differential gameplay.

Thoughts?

They're moving towards community-driven content.

I think as long as the community continues creating stuff for TF2, they'll continue updating.

TF3 eventually. Team Fortress is too important to die out.

TF3 won't happen, unless it's just an updated TF2 or something of that nature.

I doubt Valve would have the community make gamemodes or anything like that.

Okay, then what do you expect to happen in fourty years once TF2's engine and assets are essentially obsolete to the level that Quakeworld Team Fortress is today? There's essentially no way to go through and update every last level and model and effect we've got here, there's too much; so when they do push the game forward, there's no way it's not going to be a sequel or successor when they go to do it, and believe me are they going to do it. Team Fortress is too important to FPS, and to valve. It's not Dota, and it's not quite CS, but it's still that way.

Hell, TF has always been about the community, they might go off the deep end and make it a community-built game.

I doubt Valve would have the community make gamemodes or anything like that.
They already have.....

Well TF2 is still running strong, And the way that valve structures there work is up to the workers, so I guess updates will stop coming out when the developers get tired of working on the game or the community takes a large it and loses a lot of players. Id say once they crank out their next game project which is 'source 2.0' or maybe just the project to make source engine bigger and better, adding more duct-tape to the tower of duct tape that is source engine and then of coarse 'ricochet 2' probably a code name for the new half life game. then my guess is they will ether keep working on their current source engine titles and do what it seems they are already doing and updating them to the upgraded engine and keep going on like nothing has changed. personally i think valve should work on a source 2 from more or less the ground up as source is vary much so dated and is and has started falling behind for some time now and sooner or later they will run out of 'steam' for their source train. valve in the past has been known for their ground braking graphics and technical accomplishments in games. mainly half life 2 and half life, which really layered a lot of groundwork for the rest of the first person shooter aspect that is now there. and of course they are worried that they wont be able to keep up with their success record and are worried fans will be let down by half-life which is why the game is probably taking so god damn long. other then that I don't think we will see a TF3 for some time now to be honest, my guess probably 2 or more years will still be strong with TF2, even if a lot of people really myself included don't play the game that much. I mostly play for the mapping aspect now. I don't think valve will abandon the team fortress franchise as it has done so much for the company and really first person shooters and online games as a whole. My guess is updates will continue as planned for the next year at least and start to slow down drastically from there coming to a almost halt in terms of new content.

Oh my god this was a long and probably rambling post. :O

There's definitely more stuff coming because the comic points strongly to a Moon update which mite b cool, we got confirmation [somewhere] that End of the Line is literally not the end of the line as well so that's encouraging. I can see it shutting down once we get HL3 and TF3.

It's still the 3rd most popular game on Steam. It's been steady since it went Free-to-Play, and actually increasing at certain updates. Compared to LoL it's tiny... but what I mean is that any feeling of it fizzling out is not supported by the numbers.

Automated/custom tournaments, matchmaking and more maps would boost it quite a bit.

I'd like to see more people streaming it.

Hey, this is not something to make fun off. I had fun 2 days ago, and without even playing the game today I can safely say that I won't have any fun until Valve publicly apologizes and fixes this huge mistake.

How will you not have fun? The game is broken, nothing was removed, nothing was guaranteed to be added that everyone thought were going to be added. You're just going to not allow yourself to have fun because you're mad at Valve? That's your own fault, not Valve's.

I think they might do a gamemode where the TFC team is pitted against the TF2 team. At least judging by where the comics seem to be headed.

Valve has said that the comics have zero to do with an upcoming update.
