Loading an old map

I have a map I made back in 2008 that I want to fix (one of the water textures is bad). Loading it up in Hammer, I get a bad scheme warning, then can't load in a .mdl file. Then Hammer crashes to desktop. Anything I can do to fix this?

I'm new to hammer, but couldn't you just open the VMF with a text editor and replace the bad texture with something else?

Yeah, I think so, but that can be risky. I would leave it and give it to someone who knows what they are doing, as one wrong thing can destroy a full map.

P'raps. But I haven't touched Hammer in 6 years. I don't remember the names of textures. There's probably other things that need repair.

I recommend checking if you can do anything at all in hammer first. It has plenty of crashes that aren't triggered by bad maps.

Are you launching hammer via the SDK? That's old and doesn't work anymore - go to team fortress 2/bin and launch hammer.bat (only the first time; then you can use hammer.exe in the same directory).

I Seba's post is not the solution, I'd try what Coding Ethan suggested, but it is very important to make a back-up copy first.

Ahh, that may be the problem... I'll try it when I get home from work. I was reading old docs.
