changing material type for a texture?

Is there a way to edit a custom vmt to change the type of material it is? Like with the sound it makes and whatnot. I know that the default sound custom textures make when hit is kinda cardboardy. But say I wanted to change it to a more metallic sound, how would I do that?

It's a standard key/value file. Open it in your favorite code editor.

The parameter is called "$surfaceprop". You can set the value to a number of things. Set it to "metal" and you should be good.
