Way to make prop surface buildable?

Is there a good way to either make a surface on a prop model into a buildable area or a way to turn a 3D model into a brush withing Hammer?

Make an invisible brush in the same place out of any appropriate solid material. But... you can already build on props... I'm not sure why you can't?

You could try covering the prop with a brush with the 'invisible' texture (I forget what it's called and I'm on my iPad so i can't check atm).

But can't you build on the badlands spire? It's a huge model.

Spire's collision is actually just a shitload of blockbullets.
