I'd like to be able to post .webm stuff instead of having to convert to gifs so I can use the tag thingy.

For example this is 489k:http://zippy.gfycat.com/EllipticalDazzlingArizonaalligatorlizard.webm

Instead of this which is 15mb: http://gfycat.com/EllipticalDazzlingArizonaalligatorlizard#?format=gif

It's an embedded animation that plays when you click the button; some have sound, some don't, but they don't start muted because that would be annoying.

If HTML5 has a way to default-mute and loads on demand, sure.
The video tag supports muted="true" as option, but starting paused should already be fine. Or maybe 2 tags could be welcome. 1 with autoplay and muted=true, and 1 without autoplay which plays sounds as normal

Something to consider: WebM isn't the only video format out there, and not every browser supports it. Webmasters usually aren't bothered by this, since they can offer two different versions of the video and let the browser pick one, and of course YouTube just transcodes everything into every format on earth anyway, but for people posting stuff on a forum, it presents an issue.

Once upon a time people said we didn't need youtube embeds, because gifs were just fine. And before that people hated animated gifs, static jpegs were all we needed!

(new technology shows up all the time, gotta stay flexible)

I don't get the lack of youtube embeds either.

The thing is, webm is more useful as a gif replacement than as a youtube replacement. (short stuff that hardly warrants a video but it just better in motion) Gif sucks, plain and simple.

That was my intention when submitting it.
You can use gfycat to convert gifs,mp4' and other videos as well

Maybe later - they shouldn't exceed the size of normal images that much anyway (400KB)
I thought so too. But your test example is 2MB and the one in Fantasmos' problem thread is 4MB... I tend to back out of map threads when I discover someone has embedded 15 feedback screenshots that are each 1.3 MB because it is annoying. I fear it might get worse if Fantasmos and others are using them for stuff that is STILL huge for an embedded image after being webm'd.
