Moving parts

For my map, at the end of the first and second stages, I want some moving parts. For example, at the end of the first stage, I want a crane to lift a shipping crate up, and then swing it around, smashing into a building. Is this even possible in hammer? And in the second stage, I want conveyer belts that move, again, is that possible?

Conveyor belts have a dedicated entity, so yes they are possible.

As for the crane, it seems as if you can do it with parenting, a func_rotating_door, a func_door and some I/O. You might need some custom models and particles to make it look right when the collision happens, but in general it is a rather simple thing to build.

Everything you've suggested would be best as a custom model with an animation. So yes, very possible, but you'll need to branch into somehing like 3dsmax or maya

Luckily, as part of my education, I get a free 2 year trial of 3dsMax! So i guess I will jump into it straight away. Thanks.
