Can't get Propper to work

I need to use propper to get some funky offgrid geometry that I can't do with brushwork. I followed this tutorial to the letter, but there seems to be a problem around step 25 - Hammer doesn't load the materials I ported over. The VTFVer program spat out an error for every single file, but on closer inspection they all seemed to be pre-7.4 anyway, so presumably Hammer should be able to read them.

I copied the materials out of tf2_textures_dir.vpk in steamapps/common/Team Fortress 2/tf, and put them into steamapps\sourcemods\propperconfiguration\materials. Otherwise, everything else is the same from the tutorial.

I checked, and Hammer is using the Propper Configuration mod I set up, and I can turn brushes into propper_model entities, so I don't think it's a problem with the configuration.

How do I get Hammer to see them?

EDIT: oh my god i'm stupid, I forgot to extract the vmts

nevermind :s

Thanking this post because you posted your solution instead of disappearing for 14 years, even though it was something as simple as overlooking instructions.

Yeah I do it consciously. Nothing is more infuriating than finding a forum thread on the exact problem you're having, then the guy editing his post to say "nvm, fixed it", without detailing the fix.

There's also the rule where simple problems are impossible to fix until you broadcast your ignorance all over the internet in a forum post.

It is at the precise moment you hit the Post button that the solution will come to you.

Sorry for the necro post, but how did you exract the .vmt's anyway? I opened tf2_textures_dir.vpk[/i/ in GCFScape as well, and I could only see the .vtf's as well.

Only way I could figure to copy the vmt's was to copy my materials folder directly, which misses the point of extracting them out of the .dir.

VMT's aren't stored in tf2_textures_dir.vpk, they're stored in tf2_misc_dir.vpk.
