Can someone give some general tips about improving layouts? Because idon't know what to do with my map for now. 5 versions, and it still weird. I'm made a lot of changes, but I even do not know, the map has become better or worse.
This part with layout is always scaring me.
And this is one of thousands of reasons why I delayed the starting of mapping.
But 72hr contest is pushing me to start with some rly unplayeble layout. And this is kinda progress for me.
But now i'm a little confused. :blushing:

TF2 Layout, in its simpliest, is all about Yards and Transitions. I use granary as a really good example of this. There is 5 unique yards: Mid, 2 secondary points and 2 final point yards. Inbetween them all, is the transitions. These transitions are simple and provide advantages or alternate routes to attack the next yard. So, if you're doing a 5CP map your map would be something like this:

Spawns > final yard > transition > secondary yard > transition > mid < transition < secondary yard < transition < final yard < spawns

Thats it at it's MEGA simpliest. Start there! Make your yards interested, not just big flat rectangles. give each transition a meaning "This is a direct route!" or "this is a route to a height advantage!" See if that helps.

But he's making a koth map.

Just look at STV demos of your map and attend tests of it. Look at what people do, what they don't do. Decide if you want that or don't want that, then figure out what could be changed to improve that.

Note that the rules for yards and areas are totally different in CTF. Generally speaking. you want distinct routes to not consist of entirely the same combat areas, kind of like how granary 2nd yard is split in half, rather than how gorge funnels everyone through the same chokepoints.

This advice is useful too. Thank you for it. ^__^
