Probably a dumb question, but I need to clip part of a fairly large displacement (or destroy it and redo the part I want). However, a mapper friend told me a while ago clipping displacements broke one of his maps. Is this true? Or is he just dumb/had a different issue

You mean player clips? It's completely harmless.
It's better to fix whatever issue you have with the displacement though.

Clipping (cutting) displacements is fine as long as you ensure both remaining parts are still quadrilaterals.
