On top of that, it was also a good place to download specific maps without going ingame or looking through threads. Geit, can you shed some light on this?

If it wasn't a side effect of something else, and I had to guess, maybe people were leeching bandwidth from it by using the address on other gameservers... though I'm not exactly sure how you could set it up to prevent that.

I believe that HL2 sets the referrer header correctly when telling clients to download from a fast download, so you can only allow downloads from specific referrers. But that's probably not the problem, more likely the default permissions for the subdomain changed when the site moved servers.
