Movies that are worth watching

Hello. I made, and will be maintaining (whenever I feel like updating), a top movies list on google docs here. What I consider good in a movie to watch is when it surprises me in a good way, puts me in awe, makes me feel warm inside, or when I can relate to the characters; they feel real.

So, two things:
1) Do any of you know movies similar to the ones in my list that I might like?

2) What are your favourite movies that you could recommend (and why)?

1)
- The Dark Knight trilogy
- 2001 Space Odyssey
- The Rocketeer

2) -I love Drive. It has great action sequences and a lot of violence, awesome soundtrack as well. Very 80s.
(I believe it's the same movie the the guys who did Hotline Miami were inspired from)

-The first new Captain America movie was cool. It did a pretty good job with set design and costumes. And it felt patriotic without being a circle-jerk. The end credits were really well done too, a 3D version of WW2 war effort posters.

-King of California is another awesome movie. It mixes interesting themes while coating it in an almost negative view toward commercialize and the expansion of human civilization. It uses the adventure of a treasure hunt while weighing down happiness with a reminder of how drastically different the world is now. California is a great background for all of its new frontiers and liberal ideas, while the main character(s) is rather traditional and lives a rather rustic life.

-Moon. Sam Rockwell plays as this lonely dude on the surface of the moon that has to operate a large energy corporation's mining business. The art direction is thoughtful and the plot is given to you in little bits that you can at least follow. It also will make you feel really alone, which is a cool side effect, so probably watch this with someone else.

I think one of my own personal favorites, Seconhand Lions, would fit in nicely with your criteria. It's about a kid (played by Haley Joel Osment) whose mother sends him to live with his two great-uncles while she goes off to college. Neither he nor they are happy with this arrangement, but they gradually begin to open up to him and he learns that they have a secret, exciting past... or so they claim. One of the best character-driven movies I've ever seen, and not many people have even heard of it. It also has a pet lioness and Michael Caine playing a Texan. What more could you want in a movie? :D

I can second Second Hand Lions, great movie.

African animals reminded me of Duma, which is a really great movie also.

While I haven't seen the 5 minute musical short 'Momento', I can confirm that Memento is a lovely film. Douchebaggery aside...

The above two films are probably my all-time favorite ones. I can also recommend:
- Source Code; made by the same director as Moon, and while it's much blander, more hollywood-y and more riddled with plotholes than that one, it's still a fairly clever and enjoyable gimmick thriller.
- The Machinist; an intensely uncomfortable and well-crafted psychological thriller-type thing, which should reasonably appeal to you if you liked Memento.
- Franklyn; not the best film I've ever seen, but probably the most underrated. The plot feels awkwardly drama school-y at times, but the shamelessly over-the-top goth/clockpunk esthetics nonetheless make it a joy to watch. Since you enjoy both 300, memento and all those Studio Ghibli films, I think there's a good chance you'd like it.

Yeah, I've seen the batman movies and they're fun to watch but I can't see myself rewatching them for another 9 months at least, and that doesn't really tune to my definition of good. I saw the first 10 minutes of 2001 and I got bored so I stopped. I saw The Rocketeer once when I was 7 and then tried to again at 16 but got bored about 30 minutes in. Drive was good, I thought, and although I liked the main character's silent-ness, I didn't feel satisfied by the end of the movie's results on some characters (trying to not spoil anything). Haven't seen the Captain America movies so I'll give those a shot, same with King of California, and Moon.

For 1 and 2, pretty much any Quentin Tarantino movie.

I've seen most of all his movies and I hear how amazing people say they are, and I get the humour, but I can't stand to watch them over and over, although I did put Reservoir Dogs in the 'recommended' sub-list on my google doc thing, that one was alright the first time through.

Seconhand Lions

I just watched this last night, and I thought it was okay. It's a movie I could have very much enjoyed while watching as a kid (and so probably will get the DVD for my kid if I ever have a kid). But like the Swiss Family Robinson (which I did watch as a 7 year old) I don't have the patience to watch these kinds of movies anymore it seems.

Haven't seen it yet, it's now on the list of to-watch.

dr.strangelove, some older james bond movies, starwars and maybe austin powers

I've seen all but Dr.Strangelove, which from google images looks kinda cool, so I'll give that a shot.

- Source Code
- The Machinist
- Franklyn

I've seen Source Code and it was a bit hollywood-y, just like a friend from school recommended 'Unstoppable' which was horribly hollywood-y to the point where it was boring. But I guess it was an alright movie. Kinda reminds me of Deja Vu which I should add to the list actually. I've seen The Machinist, and it was weird, weird in the creepy sort of "I can take life hints on what not to do, but I don't want to watch this again". Haven't seen Franklyn yet, I'll check it out.

In all seriousness though, I would recommend:

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - about a bunch of British old folk who move to India. Very real characters, interesting plot, and very funny. Warm feeling material.

Seven Psychopaths - a hollywood screenwriter seeks real-world examples of people for his new screenplay, Seven Psychopaths. Just putting this one here because it has that awe factor, the kind of movie you'd have to watch twice to catch everything. Really interesting, and also funny in bits. It gave me a warm feeling inside - a very odd, disturbed warm feeling, but a warm feeling nonetheless.

Twelve Monkeys - some dude travels back in time from a post-apocalyptic world to find out what caused, and maybe try and prevent, the catastrophe that drove everyone underground. Very interesting plot, and definitely not typical. Not really warm feeling material, but the plot was surprising.

Adding in another vote for Secondhand Lions.

If you're looking for a movie that is just absolutely hilarious, try out Death at a Funeral.

Léon: The professional
A professional assassin rescues a young girl whose parents were killed in a police raid.

Wall-E
In the distant future, a small waste collecting robot inadvertently embarks on a space journey that will ultimately decide the fate of mankind.

The pianist
A Polish Jewish musician struggles to survive the destruction of the Warsaw ghetto of World War II.

Harry Brown
An elderly ex-serviceman and widower looks to avenge his best friend's murder by doling out his own form of justice.

V for Vendetta
In a future British tyranny, a shadowy freedom fighter plots to overthrow it with the help of a young woman.

Descriptions taken from IMDb

Also, i see that you've put "the girl with the dragon tattoo" on the list. I haven't seen that version, but i'd suggest you go watch the original movie: "Män som hatar kvinnor". They do speak swedish in it, but it's a damn good movie and subtitles is a thing. Consider that film part of this list as well.

Working in a cinema, I see most of the films we have.
yesterday we had previews of the LEGO movie, and that was easily the best thing we were showing. It's fantastic.

Dallas Buyers Club, Wolf of Wall St and 12 years a slave are all excellent too.
Lone Survivor was a pretty good war flick. quite moving at the end
That Awkward Moment surprised me, I thought it would be pretty lame and for the teens with no taste, but it was actually pretty funny.
Frozen, of course.

Haven't seen much at our cinema recently because there's been sod all going on.

Quick comments on a few that I did see:
  • Grand Budapest Hotel - Hot dang. Wes Anderson's best. Really masterful art, highly entertaining cast ensemble. Plenty of "oh crap must not laugh too loud" moments
  • The Thoroughly Lackluster Spiderman 2 - Boring throughout. I think the only good thing I have to say about it is the phasing effect Electro did was pretty rad. Actually Jamie Foxx' performance was pretty good all round, but there's nothing elevating this from mediocrity to decency. Just play Saints Row and use the dubstep gun.
  • Captain America: Winter Soldier - Brilliant action sequences...that go on way too long and get incredibly tiresome after such a lackluster and predictable plot. Easily one of Marvel's worst. Shouldn't have been named after a minor subplot, the Winter Soldier barely makes an appearence and when he does he's just a sulky teenager. *Yawn*
  • Godzilla - Really good watch. It takes it's time building up, and develops it's plot sensibly. Nasty bait and switch with characters featured in the advertising though. Also it spends a LOT of time teasing Godzilla rather than actually showing some fights. In the first hour that was OK, but when it's still happening way past the hour mark it gets aggrivating. Definitely a great film, but not mindblowing.
  • The Lego Movie - Everything is awesome.
  • Muppets Most Wanted - Ok at the time, but the more I think about it, the more disappointed i am by it. The first one was so good, with amazing songs, but this one was just totally mediocre with incredibly forgettable songs. Definitely skip this one and just rewatch the previous one.
  • Robocop - Pretty bleh. OK as far as modern remakes go, mostly because it reimagined rather than recreated, but still not really very witty or satirical.
  • That Awkward Moment - Went to see it on a whim, turns out Zach Effron is not the douchy actor I thought he was. The whole film was actually really funny and definitely worth watching. Don't be put off by the shitty "let's use memes, they're cool, that's what the kids like" title, it has nothing, I repeat nothing to do with internet culture.

Upcoming:
  • Guardians of the Galaxy - Marvel's gamble. Ragtag bunch of aliens, set entirely in space and more or less disconnected from all Earth-based heroes. Looks wickedly funny and has a decent comic run to back it up. Definitely top of my watch list for 2014
  • X Men Days of Future Past - *Yawn* I'll see it, but I'm not excited for it. I'm begining to forget why we care about the XMen beyond Jennifer Lawrence, Captain Picard and Gandalf.... Oh and Fassbender. Hugh Jackman can go suck an adamantium one though.
  • Interstellar - Full trailer released for this the other day, Chris Nolan directing a sci-fi.. thing... with Mathew Mcconaughey as lead astronaut it's squarely at number 2 on my watch list for this year.

Just look at Rocket Raccoon in the latest Guardians Trailer:

...in case anyone gets the wrong idea. this is sarcasm. that movie is one of the worst. Only watch it if you think you will enjoy watching an absolutely horrible movie that was in development hell for over a decade (hence the 2000-era crap CGI).

Top five movies NEVER watch
5. Eight crazy nights
Adam Sandlers worst animated movie of all time with surprisingly beautiful animation but with stupid bland jokes and racist, annoying, asshole-ly characters, the film just collapses.
4. The room
Your tearing me apart movie!
3.master of disguise
A boring, annoying-you-so-much-ou-want-to-burn-the-director and reaaaaally unfunny comedy with just 1% rating on rotten tomatoes.
2.dungeons and dragons
A failed movie where everything is wrong, nothing makes sense, the villain is a joke, the cgi is a joke, the story is a joke, but it's so wrong you can just laugh at it.
1. Foodfight
Does this even need a description?

Wolf Children: Yuki and Ame

23811.jpg

This is a Japanese movie, if you couldn't tell from the cover. It's by the same director that did The Girl who Lept Through Time, though I say it's much better than that.

Don't be discouraged by the country of origin, it has a very superb English Dub, and there's no reason not to watch it dubbed.

The movie begins with Hana, a college student, falling in love with a (at that point, unknown to her) werewolf. She falls pregant to him and has two children, who thanks to their dad can transform into wolves.

The movie follows Hana and her two children for the first 13ish years of their life, detailing the struggle that Hana goes through raising two wolf children, and the struggle that the children have finding their place in the world.

The "magic" aspect of it is extremely minimal, the relationships between the characters and their lives are the focus of this movie. It's a beautifully heartwarming movie that focuses heavily on the values of family and I obviously recommend it extremely highly.

Plus, the soundtrack is superb.

just watched The Grand Budapest hotel and it is still carved in my memory as a great movie you should wach. If you like good anime movies you should watch Paprika and actually anything else Satoshi Kon directed like Tokyo Godfathers and Millennium Actress.
You should watch The Iron Giant but I was little when i saw it so it might be not as good as i remember.
For a silly action movie I could recommend Crank.
And if you want to watch something funny you could watch Together by Lukas Moodysson. It is about a hippie commune in Sweden In the 1970 s.
Movies by Stanley Kubrick are great especially Berry Lindon and The Shineing.

And also I would really recommend 2001 from him but I read that you didn't like it, but you can learn so much from it as about visual design and composition that i think you could give it a nother chance. Also it is to be watched as a mood piece so basically like moving painting.
