Hello everyone, my name is puxorb. I am actually not new to mapping/hammer at all, but I decided that I actually want to get started on making a map. I've been fooling around with valve's hammer editor for 1 and a half years now, and I am very comfortable with how to use it. I have been playing Team Fortress 2 for over 2 years and have paid attention to what makes a good map. I have looked at every single map upload to this site in the last 5 months and have downloaded over 50 maps, analyzing the layouts and trying to decide how I want my map to work and what gamemode to use. Hopefully signing up to tf2maps.net will inspire me to actually make something of myself and stop sitting on my ass all day.

I hope I didn't sound like I was bragging about my skills, because I still have a lot to learn.

(also, I have a very important question about setting up a gamemode in such a way that is not normal. Where would be a great place to ask this?)

Anyways, I look forward to meeting you all and I am as excited as ever!

Hi!
Looking at other maps? You're doing it right.

(also, I have a very important question about setting up a gamemode in such a way that is not normal. Where would be a great place to ask this?)

You should start with existing gamemodes, such as King of the Hill, or Capture the Flag.
These don't require much maplogic and makes it ideal to start with.

If you want to set up a custom gamemode, you might wanna team-up with somebody from AlliedModders, if your idea is beyond just mapping.
If not, then you might wanna focus on maplogic rather than design/layout, etc.

This might be useful for gamemode customisation.

I will just tell you straight out: it is a normal gamemode. Basically I am trying to make a A+B>C cp map like gravelpit, except I want point C to be a lift, like on hightower or sd_doomsday. I just love the intensity of a spire mixed with chaos of a lifting platform. I just need to know if this is possible or if it would confuse the HUD into thinking it was both payload and cp? Also, I'm not quite sure how to make the lift move when BLU stands on it and how to scale the speed as more players join in.

So basically there are 2 points that BLU needs to cap to unlock the lift and then they proceed to lift it up to the top. I understand that the community usually frowns on custom gamemodes but I don't see this as one necessarily, just modified to a degree.

Also, I have had experience setting up ctf, 5cp, and koth map gamemodes (with a lot of tutorials) but those required not much programming, while just the lift itself in doomsday has several logic controllers.

Anyways, thanks for the feedback! I just would like to let you know that Im not trying anything too ambitious for my level of skill. Thanks!

That doesn't sound like a bad idea for a gamemode at all. I'd be interested in seeing it in action!

I haven't had experience doing it myself, but it should be as simple as parenting the control point and all the other entities needed to activate it to the lift itself. As for building the lift, this is a bit old but should do the trick.

Normally you'll want to post your questions in the Mapping Discussion sub forum.
