So I'm looking to make a real map. I've dabbled in little things. I'm working on a trade map for a friend, I posted something called "pl_deathpit", a little gimmick map of me exploring the program. But I want something real. I want to sit down and put out a map that people will actually play. (And hopefully enjoy)
From my observations, I've decided that I want to do a koth map. I have a nice midpoint laid out, and I know that you tend to work out from there. No set theme yet, but I have ideas. I know that the midpoint of course will be the center of fighting, so you should design accordingly. I also know how to create a semi-reasonable spawn area. Normal spawn room, have doors not too easily spammable. (At least, not together, you shouldn't be able to do splash damage to two doors) Lead into a point.
The transitions I have fairly well down, or at least the concepts. From the spawn area (directly out of spawn) you have a fairly hard border, only 3 or 4 exits from the immediate area. Then you have an area for the team to congregate that is near the front lines. Then there's a softer border (some streamlined paths, but a good deal more open (should be able to rocket jump past)) to the midpoint. Then midpoint and reversed on the other side.
My main problem is I don't really know how to do the area between the spawn region and the midpoint. (Also, what would you call some of these areas?) I may just be stabbing into the dark; I haven't really read up on mapping, just observed it. Am I crazy to think there tends to be a fairly definable area between spawn and the midpoint? If so, how would you lay it out?
Any other general mapping advice for a newbie? I know mechanics, and I know general theory, but I'm not sure how to put it all into practice. I could make you a FUNCTIONAL koth map, and I could easily critique one with a skeleton to it. (And not just "I don't like this for no reason, don't do it." I have reasons behind them, like seeing a sightline from spawn to mid and pointing it out) I'm really doing all this on my own. I'm just looking for a little guidance
Thanks!
