Contrary to popular belief, you should ALWAYS disguise yourself as a Medic while playing Spy.

The other team won't fire on their own medic now would they?

Try joining the TF2mappers steam group, and adding them to your friends list, not only can you usually find people to play with, but you can join their games whenever they're playtesting on a public server and get sneak peaks at their maps :)
