I have an idea for a theme: a private island that is a resort/secrit base/whatever else you need. It's wide enough to let most themes go and specific enough that it brings an unified idea to the project.

We could even attempt to have an unified skybox to make it look like all the maps takes place at the same place.

Going back to that whole public/private thing, I think development threads should be kept private on the forum while testing/gameday announcements for the maps are public.

Possibly selected members who really wanna help and not lurk can only be allowed into the private section, however map feedback can be placed normally just like any other map in that crazy map system thing we have.

You kinda wanna keep it secret so it's a surprise, but have those people to test it. I'm sure the steam group has enough members to pull through is we have weekly/bi-weekly tests either dedicated or tagging along with other map tests.

I really like this idea. We could tie it together with a story - not necessarily obvious, but something for players to figure out. Share areas between maps (from different angles).

Maybe one map is a beach-side payload, weaving through Mann Co's new exclusive beach resort! It ends in a spytech-like location hidden in the resort reception or something. Then, another map could be spytech-jungle themed inside a mountain, and blue spawn could be inside that reception area. Maybe this spytech mountain has a rocket peeking out the top (ala Incredibles) which is in the skybox of another map. Maybe we could have a volcanic themed map inside that volcano. Etc, etc.

Weave some sort of story about Mann Co releasing a new exclusive beach resort and inviting both RED and BLU in order to get them to fight each other and generate more income. We could even release a comic, or something else like that with the pack.

Europeanish, I think it's the brick texture that's throwing me off, breeze blocks aren't olde enough and the smaller red cp_well brick I think wouldn't look right either.

I guess it didn't really survive the transition, you're right. I did base it on my old German countryside school building though. The joke was that just assimilating super old maps into a new "theme pack" is dumb

Anyway in all seriousness the island idea makes sense, has more potential and lets us steal from- I mean pay homage to The Incredibles

i like the island idea and connecting maps thru skybox

for example if i make a beachside construction yard which i kinda planned to i can have a resort in construction in the background, another finished one somewhere, group of islands off in the ocean where someone has set their map too, rocket launchsite in the hills etc etc etc

id draw a plan how it looks like in my head but drawing with a mouse tired and drunk isnt the best of ideas

then every map would have a unified skybox, just a different location in it ( kinda what should be done with nucleus and frontier finale :p ) unified skybox is a rather unique challenge tho, if we were to have everyones maps in it it'd probably eat quite a few fps and making it look good and tropical and stuff if we go tropical fro example would require barnblitz style skybox palm tree sets customangled for each map and same island textures for everyone

also alternative story could be blu coming to the island to build resorts (and bases) not knowing that red already have built secret bases all over said island

then blu tries to get rid of red so they can build being builders league and all and red tries to get rid of blu and demolish anything they have built

So in a nutshell;

Everyone would pick something to create around this island (no double ups) then once the maps are completed someone will have to figure out the logistical placement of such maps and cartograph the whole island then create a unique skybox for each one.

Some things will need to stay the same (debateable)
-Sun settings
-Water (sea)
-Style of foliage

I'm assuming this will be the first set of maps that could be officially released that boasts a lot of green and plant life. I think we should make a compilation pack of models and textures for people to use so we can tie in the whole island theme while doing our own thing but not having one map look way different from the others style wise.

we should draw up a plan of the island and then pick locations :D (inb4 everyone picks headquarters and we end up with an island with 10 hq)

the models well when we get a modeler they can be created as needed imo

foliage wise we have some palms and jungletrees by heyo but idk if thats enough or we want to make our own

sun settings wouldnt even be the same imo if people want to pick different daytimes

theres also pl jungle for inspiration, its a bit un-tf2-y and framerate unfriendly tho

We could easily have it feature a series of islands instead. It would make the skybox much more interesting for the coastal maps being able to see other islands. An island with a volcano (like from the Incredibles), and island with a town on it (like pl_pier), an island with an airstrip on it, a map that's on an oil rig (mvm_oilrig), a map that's on a series of smaller islands, an island that is tall and cliffy, an island with a satellite installation (like the cradle and control from Goldeneye), an island featuring factories and a large port, etc.

I'd say the jungle pack from borneo would be a good choice for the jungles, but I need to make sure that the trees can be lit well in different forms of lighting. Egypt came with palm trees, so we don't need to worry about those.

Yeah, I'd be up for creating something for it. I'm currently talking with Hey You about collaborating our next map to fit the theme idea.

edit: I can already picture a really cool website made up for it where it looks like a vacation map overlooking an island chain. Each island/ part of an island can be clicked on to go to a page for that specific map.
