A heads-up about the SDK

Wait, so we won't be able to use Hammer for an indefinite period of time? Everything will just be gone like that?

There's nothing we can do about this? Disable automatic updates for Source SDK?

If you disable automatic updates for TF2, you might be able to survive, but then you won't be able to participate in tests. Unless you have a separate computer for that. But if you've been having the thing where it has to re-validate the game every time you restart your computer, even that might not work.

hey if the tf2 sdk does explode, anyone interested in starting a hl2 mod? probably single player or multiplayer if someone can contribute some servers

I have been wanting to learn how to mod... Actually, you know what I've always wanted to see? Fighting an Army of Mantis Men turned into a real thing. Co-op, takes place in 1950s Aperture Science, half combat and half puzzle solving.

Would making another account, downloding TF2 and the SDK and setting it to offline mode/disable automatic updates work? In that case, you could run Sandboxie and run both your normal account and your SDK account at once, with steampipe TF2 on one and GCF TF2 on the other.

If that did, work, though, then we'd have to deal with the almost nightmarish file size of two copies of TF2. As if it wasn't big enough already...

that's all good in theories but tf2 will want to validate sooner or later

Yeah, it's pretty unavoidable. Every time I restart my computer (I always put it to sleep now because cbf waiting for load times) it needs to validate so if there is a powercut say tata to Hammer

You see this is the point where Valve realised that they had accidentally released Hammer ahead of the scheduled time of whenever in the far future.

Anyway, of course they will update Hammer. They have to make thier maps with /something/...

Unless TF2 is becoming a lost cause for valve...

AFAIK, they haven't been using the same version of hammer as us for awhile now.

Will we still be able to use vbsp, vvis, and vrad through the command line?

This could see the resurrection of Notepad ++ as the least buggy map editor.

We might know sooner than later what's all going to break, since I swear there was mention about retiring the old TF2beta and doing a opt-in beta for the SteamPipe changeover coming this week.
