So I've reached a point where I need to give the player a way to go up and down 896 units, but I'm pretty sure they don't wanna go marching up and down three and a half flights of big ole stairs (stairstabs, stairstabs everywhere), but I can't think of any other way to get 'em up and down, any suggestions?

How about a teleport straight to the top, and then one to the bottom? If you want a single staircase you can do a spiral staircase.

[EDIT} Apologies, my ideas are bad. No context was given so it is more appropriate to offer no suggestions than any at all.

These are both bad ideas as teleporters will disorient and confuse players, and spiral staircases are bad for gameplay in almost every instance.

A screenshot will definitely help us figure out what sorts of things fit in context.

The idea is to get from the playerclip'd stairs to the blu-dev'd hole where the fugly lava pit is

stupidly I made the lava pit first and built the rest of the map around it, I could probably move it up like 160 units though

pay plenty attention to any other fails you may spot

it's my first map really, don't go easy on me

I say your best bet, both for the sake of making the gap traversable and for making your map more fun, would be to expand the bottom area, move it upwards a little bit and then try to make more ways that the bottom area connects with the upper one.

Try to do it all with stairs, dropdowns and simple stuff like that. If you can't seem to find a way right now, a good nights sleep can sometimes do wonders.

That's a cool sort of hellish area. I pictured some long scary staircase descending into hell. The stone wall seems too tall to move the entire area up without clipping into the lower floor.

Could you spin the entire thing around 180 and put it on the empty side without destroying the flow?

The bridge needs to be facing that way so that players who are pushed down the hole over the point land on the bridge

Gives me an idea though, maybe a circular ramp, goes around the outside of the whole thing...

Might just remake the whole thing.

Some other suggestions:

Have an art folder for dumping any and all kinds of inspirational images.
Look at other Official valve maps
Look at the thousands of community maps
Look at the levels of other source games
Look at the levels of other source mods
Look at other games set in a first person perspective
