fyi its a happy smiley, and my responce was the same as DPs, nothing to do with your mapping abilities, simply that more modelers around a mapping site is exactly what we need.

Use 3dsmax or maya, I prefer 3dsmax. If you take modeling serious you stay away from XSI.
That's just my opinion though.

I was thinking about it too, if the programs are free. they aren't free though, are they?:(

well, I'm sure there's a way to get them for free, but I don't know if I want to get them that way

XSI mod tool is free, and has build in support for exporting models into SMDs for Source game.

I'm not sure why XSI gets such a bad rap. From the little I've used them all, it seems to take quite a different approach than 3DS or Maya, but it is very powerful. I particularly found its polymesh editing tools to be good, which can be quite useful when tweaking low-poly models.

Of course, being free was the main reason I decided to learn it.

i wanted to make a new sliding door and found out that the valve wiki dropped the tutorial on animation 'cause it was incomplete.

XSI Full version isn't bad. The Mod Tool is awfully buggy though.

My workflow has been to model. UV and Texture in Maya then export 3ds to ModTool for .SMD exporting and animating.

It has worked quite well.
