Most of you are probably very skeptical, and that's fine. The Longest Yard (Q3DM17) is a very small deathmatch style map in the Quake 3 universe. Please just hear me out before posting with skepticism on how this map can fit into the TF2 universe.
Someone in the comments of my video asked why don't I just go play Quake, and that's a good question. Simply, this is TF2.
I want to bring both gameplay aspects into one game, and I feel it's very possible with this map with server plugins.

Hi, I've just completed a map and was wondering if anyone would be able to host it for a few days for testing purposes?
When developing this map, I had in mind the style of gameplay I was aiming for, as well as the themes in mind.
"DM-Minecraft" is a fast-paced deathmatch style map donning a Quake, Minecraft theme, all in Team Fortress 2.
Part of my PC gaming childhood revolved around playing on fast-paced instagib servers. With certain plugins that would help create an Instagib experience, I can share that experience I had with modern-day gamers.

For this map to function the way I envision it, the following aspects would have to be obtained:
-No Fall Damage
-Instagib
-Forced Classes: Scout
-Spawn Protection

-Quake Minecraft TF2
. _.

-Instagib, scout, no fall damage and spawn protection.
. ___.

-DM
. ____.

This type of thing simply doesn't work, TF2 is about teamplay and capture points, flags and bombs

daethmatch is bad no fall damage is gimiky instagib is gibiky forced classes suck uninstall hammer and go back to gamebananana

On a more serious note, proper Instagib needs the Super Shock Rifle and TF2 isn't big on pinpoint accuracy any-range weapons. And in any case, this is the wrong audience for this kind of thing (as you surely already have noticed).

This type of thing simply doesn't work, TF2 is about hats

Fixed that up for you.

For a small 1v1, 2v2 game mode (for which there are servers that do this. Utiliduo for example) this would/could work. Anything larger it would be quite a mess.

For your questions:
  • For spawn protection, you could (in theory) use invisible doors that open as you get near them.
  • Forced Classes would need to be server side, and I don't think point_servercommands will work.
  • No fall damage, maybe server side?

So, a lot of server side stuff.

I completely agree, and I am aiming for this right now. I have a friend who's setting up a server for 2v2's. He said that he'd write the nessisary plugins for me as well, but at a price once I'm ready to start buying several 2v2 servers.
If everything turns out to be as I envision it, and this map quickly gets popular based on YouTube views, and server player spots (4?), I'll start buying more servers.

When developing this map, I fully knew which group of people would shun me for this, and which would praise me. More specifically, there are different cliches in Team Fortress.
1. Those who value TF2 for it's core elements and make maps for them.
2. The derpy players who live in Minecraft trade servers, and those random Mario Kart maps.
3. The Competitive players who live in lobbies.
4. The casual players who play for casual fun.

Serious Players
With this map's development, I'm attempting to reach out to everyone. I figure most of you will shun me for this. With stereotyping, most of you on this forum fit into number 1 that I listed. That said though, I figure if you're all smart enough to develop maps, then you might be old enough to have played Quake 3 in the past. It's a generational, but I make maps, and played Quake 3. Perhaps you have too.

Derpy Players
The derpy side of the TF2 community might like this as well as it's extravagant in nature. It's outside the norm, and it's similar to what a lot of derpy tf2 players like. ie, Minecraft trade maps, Mario Kart servers, etc...

Competitive Players
I feel competitive players can see the value in a fast-paced instagib map or server. I've played a lot of competitive play in TF2 lobbies and played a few UGC matches. That doesn't really equivalate to everyone who plays in TF2 lobbies liking this map; however, TF2 Lobbies are competitive in nature, and so is instagib. There is a possibility that some players will enjoy this map based the similar competitive nature these two bring to the table.

Casual Players
Furthermore, I feel casual players can enjoy this map. Minecraft is a casual sandbox game, I feel casual players who play TF2 have also played Minecraft and quite possibly like it.

Once a wise man said "Trying to make everyone happy will result in everyone being unhappy"

Note : TF2 Comp players never ever play DM and even less minecraft maps : you should try and stick to one type of player because it'll get messy very fast

This just seems like one of those other maps that nobody really likes, but plays. Like all Minecraft maps, really.

You're entitled to your opinion, but please reserve any judgement until you play the map with players.

I'm starting to make a map and is rolling out well. I'm not old. I haven't played Quake.

I love minecraft. I hate minecraft (/mario kart, anything else) maps in TF2.

Being competitive doesn't make you like scouts. you can be competitive with any other class.

I hate derpy players. Play serious.

Oh I have. About 20 other maps that are Minecraft themed, with a map that doesn't compliment gameplay.

Have you tested your map at all? What did the competitive players have to say? How can you tell me to be quiet when you don't have any proof you're right?

I haven't made a map yet, and it likely won't be a good one - but that is not to say I don't know a bad map when I see one.

And now I wonder why I even bothered to post here. Instead of any form of constructive criticism, I'm berated with jabs and attacks.
Before posting on this forum, I was hesitant, but felt I would at-least find someone who would act mature and not flame me for extravagance and originality. I was wrong and now I wonder why I even bothered to post here. Instead of any form of constructive criticism, I'm berated with jabs and attacks. Whether you believe this or not, I put forth a lot of effort in developing this map, and a lot of effort in what I was posting in this thread.
I don't see a reason to post here anymore as it'll just lead to people flaming me, so I bid you all farewell.
Good day folks.

Don't worry, everyone makes these shitty maps.
They're just bashing head-on on you because you're bringing something that we don't know it can work.
We studied the maps in-game, and every single thing we see, every choke, every flank, we study and reconsider.
Your map is bringing too much inovation and it is generally not characteristic.
How would we know it can work?
How would we know it can't work?
We're just a bit skceptical on new, gimmicky maps.
It is a tough community to enter.
I spent about 9 months without an account.
I joined in and participated with the community.
Just learn how we think.
Making a map is surely a pain in the butt, but it is worth it.

Welcome to the new TF2Maps.net.

Keep working on the map. It sounds like you know it isn't perfect, but you want to get this type of thing to work, and thats the best thing that can happen right now.

It's hard to be constructive when the map has only a few walls and is minecraft-themed.

I'm skeptical about it because, with what you said, it seems like it won't be much balanced or stuff like that. But ofc playing it can change my mind.

Welcome to the new TF2Maps.net.
I've seen reactions toward DM and duel maps similar to this all the way back in 2008. This is not the "new TF2Maps.net". This site has always been about making Valve-quality products and improving them. The idea that this kind of reaction is new is ludicrous. As far as you go back, every DM and Duel map has people saying "OK, this looks alright, but it's not TF2." Frozen, you yourself have said this before, and as recently as this year.

A 2v2 map that uses another game's art style and requires several plugins to modify the core mechanics of TF2 is not what we seek to create, and we're here as a community to support each other in that. In fact, it goes against the things that we love about TF2 and the things we want to improve. For many people here, what you're doing may as well be another game entirely.

I'm sorry that you expected something different, Rizz, and I apologize if anyone has hurt your feelings. That being said, you should make an effort to know your audience. People that map for UGC or other leagues often don't even post maps here for a long time, if at all. And people that make (good) trade or idle maps typically don't post them here, either. If this is a map for a very specific group, why seek our input at all beyond technical expertise? Why would we test this rather than the groups that you are aiming this toward?

Not to mention maps are tested in gamedays, not just thrown on a server; you posted in a discussion subforum, not a release subforum; and, your original post has disclaimers in it leading me to believe that you knew you'd get this reaction. All of this makes people think you're throwing it in our face.

That being said, good luck with this and I hope that in the future, if you want to expand your skill set into more regular TF2 maps, you keep us in mind. We'll be here to help.

I'm locking this as Rizz has already said he's done with the thread and it doesn't need to go on. Rizz, if you'd like it unlocked, please PM me.
