Just that, can it be done? Would it force the map into MvM mode, or just break it?

it does "work"

the only problems are the game refuses to remember any ammount of money you get (and you pretty much can't get any)
even a spawned tank's money does not increase your ammount
and even if you do have the money, buying upgrades simply do not register when checking out
